Restaurant Review: Mickey’s of Coronado

On June 12th, Mickey’s of Coronado opened with a ribbon-cutting ceremony at its Coronado Ferry Landing location. Mickey’s is a locally-owned outdoor food cart specializing in gourmet hot dogs and Polish sausages. eCoronado.com took a trip the Ferry Landing to sample a meal at this new eatery. Check out some of the highlights below!

With friendly service, affordable prices, and yummy food with lots of options, Mickey’s of Coronado makes a perfect lunch or dinner choice for locals and tourists of all ages. The “skim boarder” hot dog is just $3.01 for a traditional bun and any topping. The “long boarder” and “Polish long boarder” hot dogs are larger and slightly more expensive at $4.63, but allow for your choice of traditional or pretzel bun. Since all ingredients are a la carte, it’s easy to mix and match traditional ingredients, like ketchup and relish, with specialty ones such as mango and pineapple sauces.

My sister and I bought two skim boarder hot dogs and topped one with a classic combination of ketchup, fresh onions, and a crunchy topping on a pretzel bun; the other with bacon ketchup and crunchy topping on a traditional bun. The ingredients tasted fresh and high quality and we loved having a wide array of toppings to choose from. The cart also serves a range of crushed ice drinks. For dessert, Mickey’s offers surprisingly delicious fresh-baked cookies and “loaded churros” drenched inwhipped cream, chocolate and caramel sauces.

The name Mickey’s, according to owner Alan Kinzel, comes from the combined names of his two sons, Matthew and Nick, who was nicknamed as “Nicky” during his childhood. Years ago, Kinzel owned a small hot dog/ice cream stand in Arizona and frequently visited Coronado. He fell in love with the scenery and small-town atmosphere of the island and moved here about a year ago. When he picked up the local newspaper and saw that a defunct hot dog cart at the Ferry Landing was for sale, the pieces fell into place. His son, a rising sophomore at CHS, applied and was admitted to Coronado School of the Arts’ digital animation program and the family moved to Coronado. “Coronado is just the perfect place for kids to grow up,” says Kinzel, who also loves the island’s beaches, school system, and year-round sun.

Kinzel started Mickey’s with the idea of bringing fun, affordable gourmet cuisine to the Coronado Ferry Landing as well as giving back to the greater Coronado community. “We try to base our operations out of Coronado as much as possible,” he said, “Our kitchens are here, we hire Coronado residents, and we even source our ingredients from local providers, such as Ganosh Gourmet.” Kinzel was assisted by a San Diego-based marketing and advertising company, which helped him design the colorful exterior of the cart and bring it to life.

Overall, I would definitely recommend Mickey’s of Coronado to anyone looking for a quick and scrumptious bite to eat at the Coronado Ferry Landing!
