The third year (2013) of operation of the reconstituted Coronado Lawn Bowling Club (CLBC) was an all-out record breaking banner year.
It all began in January 2013 when former Club President, Bill Hiscock, became the first and still the only bowler in San Diego County to be inducted into the Bowls USA Hall of fame putting the CLBC on the national map of recognition. Following that announcement, the Club learned that it had won a trophy for being the Club in the nation to have the largest number of Super Shots in 2012. Then, a record was set when the CLBC won the Super Shots Trophy a second consecutive time for the largest number of Super Shots in 2013.
Throughout the year, the CLBC proceeded to break most of its records. The Club had a record breaking number of social bowls draw games players in a single day with 32 players; a record breaking single day of green use of 115; a record breaking month of green use of 751; record breaking attendance at Twilight Open Bowling of 597 including a record breaking evening of 53 participants.
As if that was not enough, the Club became the first of the 30 Clubs in the Southwest Lawn Bowling Division to have a winning team in the the 5-Man All Star Tournament twice within a 4-year span. The 5-Man All Star Tournament is held in Laguna Beach and it pits teams of the best male bowlers from Southwest Division Clubs in 4 tournament games in one day. The games are Singles, Pairs, Triples and Rinks. Pictured (above) is the CLBC winning team of (L-R) Jim Olson, Bill Brault, Steve Smith, Bill Hiscock and Jeff Rogers. Look for that team to defend that title in 2014. Bill Brault brought further recognition to the CLBC by becoming the National Singles Champion. Green use for the year was up by over 1,000 uses to a record 5,837.
The Coronado Lawn Bowling Club is growing and thriving as it is gaining statewide and national recognition for being one of the smaller clubs that is accomplishing what many larger clubs have not. As 2014 moves along, the Club has already far exceeded green use for January having now included a bowling program with Sacred Heart School and initiated a special Sunday Set Up Games time for experienced tournament level bowlers. And, the telephone is ringing daily with requests for FREE LESSONS from locals and visitors alike who pause to watch the game and decide they wish to try it.
For anyone who may be interested in Lawn Bowling, just come by the green at Seventh Street and D Avenue and see the game being played. If you have questions, just ask any bowler or call 619-319-5509 to inquire about a free lesson. No equipment needed, just wear flat soled shoes.
