  • Sunday’s Bike the Bay EventTraffic on the San Diego-Coronado Bridge will be impacted on Sunday, August 28, for the ninth annual Bike the Bay event. The ride is sponsored by the San Diego Bicycle Coalition and set to begin at 7 a.m. The event will take participants across the bridge then south through town toward Imperial Beach. The bridge will remain open with one lane of vehicle traffic in each direction using eastbound lanes. A small section of Glorietta Boulevard will be closed during the event, between Fourth and Fifth Streets. Riders will use Strand Way, which will be closed to vehicle traffic, to reach the Bayshore Bikeway to head south out of Coronado. State Route 75 will remain open in both directions. All restrictions will be removed at approximately 10 a.m.

  • Glorietta Bay Pump Station Spill:  The ongoing Glorietta Pump Station construction project led to a series of events that resulted in the failure Tuesday, August 23, of a temporary sewer bypass pump. The failure caused an estimated 3,500 gallons of effluent to spill into and close section of Glorietta Bay. Once discovered, a backup pump was immediately activated and the flow relieved. Signs have been posted at the edge of Glorietta Bay to inform the public of possible elevated bacteria levels. City crews and the contractor’s crew members cleaned up the area. We hope the bay waters will be clean by this weekend.

  • Requests and Concerns:  The City receives many questions and requests for information and service. This week, we received a request from a resident who wanted to build a helicopter pad on private property. The City’s zoning code does not allow it. The City responds daily to requests, questions and concerns. One way to ensure your question gets answered is to submit it through the City’s new Ask Coronado app.Download the app and use it to report a repair issue or send us a message. The app is available in the Apple Store or in the Google Play Store by clicking on the links or by searching for “Ask Coronado” in either of the stores. Users can quickly and easily submit service requests, such as reporting a needed sidewalk repair or storm water issue, or a downed tree by completing a short description of the request. A photo may be included to provide additional details.

  • Friends of the Coronado Public Library:  The Friends of the Coronado Public Library operates the annual Book Sale in April. Over the years, tens of thousands of books have been sold to fund programs and events for the public to attend free, such as the Summer Festival concert series. The Friends also operates the Second Hand Prose used book store located at the rear of the Library and an “honor” shop of books and magazines for sale in Library’s front lobby. Friends of the Library is a nonprofit group whose mission is to support the Coronado Public Library. It is managed by a Board of Trustees and has many hard working volunteers. The City is working on a plan to improve the store.
