Port Invites Public to Provide Feedback on Draft of Master Plan Update

Series of Community Discussions on the Future of the San Diego Bay to be Announced

As part of the Port of San Diego’s robust public outreach efforts for its Integrated Planning initiative, the public is invited to review and provide written comment on the Discussion Draft of the Port Master Plan Update (PMPU). The Discussion Draft is available for a 90-day review period ending on Wednesday, July 31, 2019.

The PMPU Discussion Draft includes and addresses allowable uses and activities, future development, and management of water and land within the Port’s jurisdiction by providing a mix of goals, policies and standards supported by written narratives, figures and tables. It is a major milestone for the Integrated Planning effort and includes the previously accepted Integrated Planning Vision, as well as the refined goals and policy concepts drafted with review and input by the public, stakeholders and Board of Port Commissioners over the past several years.

The Discussion Draft is available for review here (Silver Strand/Coronado Cays info starts on page 219, and Coronado on page 229) and will be presented to the Board of Port Commissioners at a special meeting at 10 a.m. on Tuesday, April 30, 2019. Hard copies of the Discussion Draft are also available at the District Clerk’s Office located at 3165 Pacific Hwy, San Diego, CA 92101. Comments on the Discussion Draft will only be accepted in writing and should be submitted to [email protected] or mailed to the Port of San Diego, Attn: Planning Department, 3165 Pacific Highway, San Diego, CA, 92101.

Often referred to as “the future of the Port,” this initiative will guide the future of approximately 6,000 acres of water and land within the Port’s jurisdiction along the San Diego Bay waterfront. The Port began a series of public outreach events in 2017 focused on the drafting of the PMPU to ensure public feedback was thoroughly incorporated in the discussion and drafting of the document. Reviewing and commenting on the Discussion Draft is another opportunity for the public to provide input on this comprehensive update to the Port Master Plan before environmental review is conducted pursuant to the California Environmental Quality Act and review by the California Coastal Commission.

The public will also have an opportunity to ask questions of the Port’s planning staff to help navigate the Discussion Draft’s contents and the process for providing input at upcoming community discussion events which will be scheduled during the 90-day review period. Titled “The Future of San Diego Bay: A Community Discussion,” the events will be hosted at several locations throughout San Diego County to provide input opportunities for all those who enjoy San Diego Bay. Additional details about these events will be forthcoming.

Once the review period closes, Port staff will address comments and may further revise the document, as needed, before presenting an updated draft to the Board and public.
