A San Diego native, Dr. Laura knew by the age of 8 that she wanted to become an orthodontist! After spending many afternoons in the office of her mother, Dr. Milberg, she grew to love the profession of making people smile, and the fun and rewarding experiences of success she shared with the patients. While Dr. Laura was in school here in San Diego, she was a French horn player in the San Diego Youth Symphony and her high school band. She also played tennis and badminton in high school, and was active at the Barnes Tennis Center.
Following her high school graduation, Dr. Laura moved to the Midwest where she studied chemistry and music at Grinnell College in Grinnell, Iowa. During her junior year, she spent a semester abroad in Vienna, where she studied the French horn with a former member of the Vienna Philharmonic. Shortly thereafter, Dr. Laura continued to move east for dental school, where she attended Tufts University School of Dental Medicine in Boston, MA. While at Tufts, Dr. Laura was awarded the prestigious Dean’s Research Scholarship, which allowed her to devote her summers to dental research. Dr. Laura was also active in the community outreach programs at Tufts, where she helped develop and implement international outreach trips, such as her trip to the remote village of Muchila, Zambia. Aside from becoming a more resourceful clinician, this experience greatly opened her eyes to the importance of global health involvement and patient education.
Dr. Laura finally returned back home to the West Coast in 2013, when she accepted a position at the renowned post-doctoral orthodontic specialty program at the USC Herman Ostrow School of Dentistry. In addition to learning the conventional methods of orthodontics, Dr. Laura was trained with the most cutting edge modern technologies, such as digital intraoral scanners, 3-D printing, and temporary anchorage devices (‘mini-screws’), to enhance patient treatment.
It has always been a lifelong dream to one day practice orthodontics alongside her mother. Dr. Laura feels truly privileged to have finished her educational journey and to be back in San Diego. She feels extremely blessed to be a part of her mother’s practice and this amazing profession.
On Being an Orthodontist
Like many of you, Dr. Laura experienced the tremendous aesthetic and functional impact that orthodontics can have on one’s life. As a fearful young patient herself, Dr. Laura attributes her own treatment success to the positive, warm, encouraging, and comfortable environment she was treated in. Her own experiences have greatly shaped her treatment philosophy of providing her patients with excellent health, smiles, and ‘bites’ in a personalized empathetic environment. Like her mother, she aims to provide care to the ‘whole’ patient, and cherishes the relationships and friendships that orthodontics brings to her life.
