The Islander Sports Foundation is kicking off the island’s Independence Day festivities in style with the Islander Invitational Golf Tournament. The pre-tournament activities will include the BBQ lunch and Islander Legends putting contest.
The foundations annual best ball / scramble tournament will be held at the award winning Coronado Municipal Golf Course on Thursday, July 3rd. Islander faithful are encouraged to register as individuals or a team online www.islanderalumni.com. All proceeds will go directly to Coronado High School sports.
In addition to great golf, the tournament provides an unique opportunity for participants to look back at the great athletes and teams of the past 100 years. Each hole is designated for an Islander alumni or coach legend. Islander Legend displays will be located at each tee for players to enjoy.
Last year’s Islander Legend inductees included: Islander coaching legends Hal Niedermeyer, Beverley Hinkle, Gene Greene, Robbin Adair, Ron Nixon, and Bud Mayfield; Coronado Unified School District Superintendent legend David Blumenthal; Islander student-athlete legends Frank Greene (’29), Ralph Mitchell (’38), Scott Knox (’61), Ken Huff (’70), Robbie Haines (’72), Andy Nicholls (’76), Tami Fick (’79), Tim Robyn (’80), Brian Smock (’91), Layne Beaubien (’93), and Taylor Jensen (’02) rounded out the inaugural Islander Legend namesakes for the 18 holes. For a sneak peak at this year’s Islander Legends (class of 2014 inductees) you can go to the CHS Islander Alumni Facebook page (search on CHS Islander Alumni from within Facebook).
Custom hand carved Islander tiki awards (pictured above) will be presented to the tournament’s low scoring team. Individual players will also take their best shots at the longest drive, straightest drive, closest-to-the-pin and hole-in-one contests at this year’s event. Immediately following the tournament and before the start of the CHS All-Class Reunion, the Islander Sports Foundation will introduce the 2014 Islander Legends and present the tournament awards.
