City of Coronado and Naval Academy Alumni Group “Old Goats” to Honor Wounded Warriors

Attendees of the 2013 Wounded Warrior reception listen to Lt. Jason Redman

The City of Coronado and Old Goats, an association of alumni from the United States Naval Academy, are gearing up to honor American heroes this month. On Sunday, March 9, the Old Goats and the City of Coronado will once again honor 3 wounded warriors selected from the C5 (Comprehensive Combat and Complex Casualty Care) Unit at Naval Medical Center San Diego at a reception held at the Coronado Community Center. During the weekend prior to the reception, these three wounded warriors and their families will enjoy a getaway weekend at the Hotel del Coronado.

The reception will also host Kimberly Dozier, a reporter for intelligence and special operations for the Associated Press and former CBS news correspondent who wounded in a car bombing in Iraq in 2006 while covering the war. Two of her colleagues were killed in the attack. In her bestselling memoir, Breathing the Fire, Dozier recounts the attack and her recovery. Also during the reception, Kindergarten students from Coronado will perform patriotic songs and help Mayor Casey Tanaka present keys to the city to the honorees.

The Wounded Warriors who will be honored at the event represent three of the branches of the armed forces – a Navy hospital corpsman, a Marine Gunnery Sergeant, and an Army Specialist.

The Old Goats association is a group of 1960 U.S. Naval Academy graduates. The association was formed in 2008 and is named for the Naval Academy’s mascot.

In addition to the three wounded warrior honorees, approximately 80 additional wounded warriors from NMSD will each have the opportunity to dine at a Coronado restaurant thanks to the generosity of local restaurants and sponsors.

Sponsors for the wounded warriors include Hotel del Coronado, Coronado Brewing Company, Bigantine/Miguel’s, Coronado Island Marriott and Vigilucci’s.
