EE6A1552
Two sailboats, including one getting battered against a rock jetty by high winds and surf, have washed ashore on the City’s beach overnight. A third sailboat is offshore but is secured for now. Photo submitted by Tom Catlin.

The City of Coronado is working to ascertain if there are any hazardous materials on board, such as fuel, solvents or batteries, to facilitate removal of anything that may pose a risk to the environment. The U.S. Coast Guard also is on hand. The City is attempting to contact the owners of the vessels to take responsibility for their sailboats.

One owner was at the beach earlier today and said a vessel removal company was set to remove his sailboat tomorrow morning. The City has been unable to contact the owner of the other vessel. The sailboats appear to have washed ashore during the night from the Zuniga Jetty free anchorage.

Lifeguards have secured the area and are working with Coast Guard officials to facilitate safe removal of the vessels. However, a high wind advisory was in effect this morning and a high tide was coming in, hampering efforts.
