Marvel movies are full of action, adventure and quite often, some twists and turns. “Captain America: The Winter Soldier” has it all.
Chris Evans returns as Steve Rogers, a WWII science experiment turned super hero. During WWII, his role was clear, defeat Hitler (and more specifically the Nazi offspring cult, Hydra), and help America win the war. After being frozen for some 70 years, Rogers wakes up in the 21st century.
He is now trying to grasp his new environment and truly decide what role he will pursue. As the world has grown more dangerous, our government has built greater defense forces to combat the potential threats. Captain America struggles with preventative violence versus reactionary battles. Nick Fury (excellently played by Samuel L. Jackson) tells Rogers that with the new super carrier being developed we will “neutralize a lot of threats before they happen.” “I thought the punishment usually came after the crime,” replies Rogers, showing that he may have some fundamental differences with what S.H.I.E.L.D. is developing and how they plan to use it. He quickly learns there are very few people he can trust.
Captain America is fighting The Winter Soldier, but he is fighting something much bigger. The action scenes are gripping, thrilling and sometimes brutally violent and the question that permeates the entire film is who, really, are the bad guys? There is plenty of hand to hand combat and surprises around every turn.
In addition to the action scenes, there is amusing play between characters that helps keep it light at times. Scarlett Johansson returns as Natasha Romanoff and is as tough and beautiful as ever. Robert Redford is Alexander Pierce and Anthony Mackie joins the fun as Sam Wilson. As with any Marvel movie, you should stay through the entire credits. There is always a short scene at the end.
Katie said, “I thought it was really balanced and very relevant. There was a quote in the movie that stood out to me about when you wage war, people will fight back, but with enough chaos, people are willing to give up their freedom for security.”
Maurice offered that “it was a great action film. People who want to understand the movie better should watch Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D on ABC.”
If you enjoy the Marvel movies, I believe this one will not disappoint. I am ready to see it again!
