If you were one of the 10,000 or so people who biked, walked, carted, scootered or strollered to 92118 Day ~ it was the event of the century to attend! Starting with the Tennis Tournament, the fun continued with Lawn Bowling, Golf, Yoga, Bingo, Art, Face Painting, Spikeball, Cornhole, Bocce Ball, Volleyball, a 5K Run from Base to Base, and so much more. There was so much to see and do with classic cars, photo opportunities, sandcastle building, to name just a few of the incredible offerings of this community-based day.
“The goal of 92118 Day was to give our community an opportunity to celebrate Coronado and I believe it was a great success,” commented Mayor Bailey. The 92118 Committee of Alisa Kerr, Steve Johnson, Rob Crenshaw and so many others too numerous to name received an overwhelmingly positive response with people now requesting this type of block party be an annual event celebrating wonderful Coronado. Following the event, everyone was especially grateful when they heard comments that the streets and beach were cleaner than before the event began. This is just a small testament to the outstanding citizens of our community.
Committee Member Alisa Kerr shared with us: “92118 Day was absolutely amazing. I could not be more pleased with how the day went. I think it’s fair to say we met our goal of making 92118 Day a fun, safe celebration of Coronado, for Coronado, by Coronado. It was special to see 10,000 locals [Coronado Police Department estimate] enthusiastically fill the street with such pride in our community and camaraderie with their neighbors. It was truly a memorable once in a lifetime event for a community worth celebrating every day.”
As for all the work that went into the day and the people involved, Alisa said: “It was a lot of work – way more than I was expecting. But it was worth every second to see how successfully it all came together. What is so impressive to me is that this celebration was comprised entirely of local talent. We had about 100 local businesses and organizations sharing their goods and missions in fun booths lining Ocean Blvd. There was a car show of historical Coronado vehicles, a community art project, face painting, kids art activities, beach games, and more all entirely hosted by local organizations. Our live music, National Anthem, and celebrity MC were all outstanding local talent. Our food court was made up of ten local restaurants and private chefs. The 92118 Cantina served up drinks from more than 10 locally owned craft breweries, distilleries, and restaurants. VIP was organized by a team of three locals, with a donation by a local, and featured food donated by local hotels, and decor and swag from local shops. Even the Navy was there with vehicle displays. And, don’t forget, everything was planned and carried out solely by local volunteers. It’s been truly impressive to me the amount of diverse and quality talent and resources we have right here on this little island. It’s remarkable. Thank you to everyone for being part of making 92118 Day such a fun and truly memorable celebration of our city.”
Gastronomic delights included the MooTime Ice Cream Eating Contest and a variety of offerings from 12 local vendors serving up their specialties from tacos to sushi to pizza. The Beer Garden was such a hit that the well ran dry before everyone (of age) could partake, but wine and spirits rounded out the drink options in that area. The melodic music was top notch with four homegrown bands, including In Midlife Crisis, Ron’s Garage, Crown Town and It’s Never 2L8.
The 39 local vendors (those with physical shops, online shops, services and more) had incredible 92118 merchandise and a host of other Coronado and beach-themed items. The 25 charitable organizations had a host of good information about community involvement for pets, kids and health.
Jamie Monroe, of Easy Day Sports, reported results from the Run of the Century, from base to base, which had approximately 250 people sign up and 150 people participate (all wearing the same bib number 92118). The race was dominated by Coronado youth and the high school cross-country team – special thanks to Amy Youngblood for getting the team on board to run and Coach George Green for changing the team’s workout schedule to get their attendance.

The icing in the sky at the end of the day was the remarkable fireworks show put on by the Hotel del Coronado, followed by the movie Blue Crush on the beach.
It took a small but mighty army, behind the scenes, to pull off an event of this magnitude. There were so many people involved, and deserving thanks, that made this amazing day a reality (and the following day for the beach clean-up also).
With so many events going on all over Coronado from morning until night, it was almost impossible to capture every moment. The 92118 Day Facebook page is filled with revelers sharing the images and videos they captured.
