Millions of gallons of raw sewage and industrial waste from the Tijuana River are forced through concrete culverts and fall into a stream, creating a “waterfall effect” that aerosolizes toxic chemicals. The site emits hydrogen sulfide (), or “sewer gas,” at levels up to 4,500 times higher than typical urban environments (peaking at in some reports). These emissions exceed state air quality standards, causing headaches, nausea, and respiratory issues for local residents and students.
