Junior middie Joe Poeletta scored a game-high three goals to lead the Landon School to an 8-2 victory over No. 3 Coronado on Monday afternoon in the first game of the Islanders’ weeklong road trip to Maryland. Sophomore attackman Tim Kenna and freshman attackman Matt Opsahl each added a pair of goals to help the Bears (8-3) win their second straight. Senior middie Matt Morrison had a goal to round out the scoring for Landon. In a losing effort, senior attackman Bobby Braun and senior middie Sean O’Brien each scored once for Coronado (5-1), which had its five-game winning streak snapped. “They weren’t making too many mistakes,” O’Brien said. “They made hardly any unforced errors.” Landon dominated possession and controlled the game from the start against California’s top-ranked team. The Bears led 3-1 at the end of the first quarter, 5-1 at halftime and 8-1 at the end of the third quarter. Landon, which is the high school alma mater of Coronado head coach Alex Cade, outshot the Islanders, 40-10. Coronado will next face Good Counsel and unbeaten Wootton on Wednesday.
