Free Home Safety Assessments

Last week I was talking to a new acquaintance about a new program my work is offering for seniors, and she gave me the great idea to start my own blog on ecoronado to help get the word out.

But first, a little about myself…I have been working for Comfort Keepers for almost three years here in Coronado, but four years total. I started off as a caregiver in college to fulfill the total number of volunteer hours needed for my undergrad in Therapeutic Recreation and worked with the office in Coralville, Iowa for a little over a year. When I graduated I moved home with my mom about an hour away from San Diego. I started as a caregiver in a different office, but unfortunately there weren’t any hours available and I needed to work. I reached out to my boss, Jennifer Ramos and she said that I would get hours if I moved to San Diego, so that’s what I did! Within a week I found a place and moved! A couple of months after my move, she asked me if I would be interested in training coordinator position in the office. I started off part time, while still working as a caregiver on weekends and quickly became a full-time administrative assistant. Since then, I have held several different positions within the company while completing my Master’s degree in Sport Management. Most recently, I became a Safety Advocate for Comfort Keepers. It is a new position that plays to my strengths, and this is where I currently am and why I’m starting this blog!

A little about Comfort Keepers for those of you who are wondering…This Comfort Keepers started in 2003 and has operated out of Coronado since 2005. We are a non-medical in-home company that serves Southbay San Diego. We have a wide range of services, which include but are not limited to the following…

Companionship Services:

-Meal Preparation, laundry, light housekeeping, grocery shopping/errands, transportation, medication reminders, grooming, live-in services, 24-hour care, and respite care or relief for family

Personal Services:

-bathing, grooming and hygiene, mobility assistance, transferring and positioning, toileting and incontinence, feeding and special diet, and dementia care.

My new position has me going out to see clients on a constant basis and making sure that they are happy and comfortable. I want to make it clear that I’m not trying to sell our services (but if you’re interested that’s ok :-), but rather let you know that we are now offering a free home safety assessment for elderly. I would come out to the home and check for safety concerns such as tripping hazards, grab bars, raised toilet seats, fire alarms, etc. and then make suggestions on how to make the home safer for you or your family member. We want to do our best to prevent falls or injuries in the community and feel this is a great resource to consider. If you’re interested in a free home safety assessment, please contact us at 619-739-4596. We also offer several options for safety through Safety Choice, which was started through Comfort Keepers.

Anyway, we would love to hear from you. I hope this is a great option for you. I’m going out to enjoy this cooling down weather for my lunch! Ferry Landing here I come!
