Community Voices: What has happened to the Del?

We just returned home after being turned away from Brunch this morning at 10:30. We did not have reservations; however the room (as has frequently been the case recently,) appeared to only be 50% in use. When we told the Hostess we did not have reservations she then asked if we were Guests of the Hotel. We were not as we live in Coronado. She said that the Crown Room was not accepting any parties not staying in the hotel today.
Before moving to Coronado several years ago, we stayed at the Del 4-5 times per year over the past 38 years and we frequent the Del Shops and Crown Room Brunch several times each year. We bring all of our out of town guests to the Del for lunch and to walk on the beach and visit the shops. The Del has apparently become too elitist in recent years and is no longer the “magical place” that it once was. We would hope that the Del could recognize the support it receives from the local community and remember the service given in years gone by, that now appears to be just gone.
What a shame.
