CSF Summer Enrichment Profile – Kathy Cotten, Navigating Middle School and The Fine Art of Debate

My name is Kathy Cotten and I teach 7th grade history and English at Coronado Middle School. I am excited to be teaching two classes for the Coronado Schools Foundation Summer Enrichment Program. Below is some information about those classes.

Navigating Middle School:

As a middle school teacher I know how important it is for our students to learn how to manage their workload thorough time management and organization. If you have an incoming 6th grader, or a 7th or 8th grader who needs a bit of support in these areas, I would love to have them join me for “Navigating Middle School.” This will be a fun filled morning where your student will be provided with a “Middle School Toolbox,” that will support them in their learning as they journey through middle school!

Make Our Claim: The Fine Art of Debate

One of the most important California State Standards for English requires students to engage in a variety of collaborative discussions including debate.  Students will research a topic of their choice to prepare and present their claims in a debate format. They will learn not only how to support their own ideas with specific evidence but how to listen to and respond to the claims of others.
