The Coronado Democratic Club invites community members to its general meeting on Wednesday, April 3, 2025. The event will feature an enlightening presentation by Arcela Nuñez, a dedicated educator and community organizer.
Program: Arcela Nuñez, who immigrated from Mexico at the age of twelve and overcame significant challenges to become the first in her family to attend college, will lead a discussion titled “Empowering Community Through Education.” Arcela’s journey through academia took her from UCLA to the University of Minnesota, where she earned advanced degrees in history and political science. Inspired by Paulo Freire, she co-founded Universidad Popular, an innovative organization that cultivates leadership and empowers communities through education.
Her talk will explore how education can nurture democracy and enable individuals to use their voices and power to shape their communities. Arcela began her journey of teaching and organizing in high school with MEChA, and she continues to live by the values of knowledge, community service, and civic participation that she has cherished since then.
