Winners Announced: “NADO Welcomes USS Coronado” Youth Poster Contest

All Coronado school children, K-12, were invited in January to enter a poster contest commemorating and welcoming Coronado’s namesake, the Navy’s newest littoral combat ship, the USS Coronado. Sponsored by the Coronado Cultural Arts Commission (CAC), the VFW Post 2422, and the USS Coronado Commissioning Committee, students were asked to create posters that “reflect pride in our city and the US Navy and will welcome the newly commissioned ship to our hometown.”

Over 300 entries were received, representing three general age groups: Primary/Elementary, Middle School, and High School. The contest was judged by an expert panel of judges, including Margaret Wright (CHS Educator for over 30 years and member of CAC’s Arts Education) and Tina Christiansen (local artist and member of CAC’s Visual Arts & Film). Winners have been announced and will be honored by the Coronado City Council at their March 18, 2014 meeting. Susan Keith, former City Council Member and Sponsor of the USS Coronado, will present the award to the Grand Winner. The Grand Winner will also be recognized during the Commissioning Festivities on April 5 at Naval Air Station North Island and the winning poster will be presented to the ship for permanent display.
