The Coronado Cultural Arts Commission and MainStreet Ltd. invite Coronado students in grades 9-12 in public, private, and home schools to be part of this summer’s OZ CON by creating an original poster design for the OZ CON Poster Contest. Winning posters (first, second and third place) as well as the other entries will be available to Coronado businesses to display in windows on Orange Avenue and throughout the downtown area. It will be an opportunity to showcase your creativity on the occasion of a very exciting celebration.
OZ CON will be taking place this August to celebrate the unique relationship Coronado has with Wizard of Oz author L. Frank Baum. Beginning in 1903. Mr. Baum and wife Maud came to Coronado to escape the harsh winters of the Midwest. Mr. Baum spun his magical tales while enjoying the sunshine, creating indelible marks around town, and credited with giving Coronado its popular nicknames “The Enchanted Island” and “The Emerald City.”
During OZ CON, there will be a series of citywide events taking place from August 1-10 in Coronado and San Diego. Oz will come to life through the magic of live theatre, film, concerts and musical cabaret, exquisite exhibitions, lectures, and walking tours. (For a complete list of events, see www.OzConInternational.com)
This poster contest is open to all Coronado students in grades 9 – 12 in public, private, and home schools. Utilize your fresh and imaginative ideas based on the magical characters and vivid places described and depicted in The Wizard of Oz books, keeping in mind the historic character of our beloved downtown. The goal of this contest is to increase awareness of Coronado’s unique connection to The Wizard of Oz and showcase OZ CON INTERNATIONAL events, as well as add color and excitement to our downtown storefronts. Merchants will be encouraged to decorate their windows to complement the posters.
An Entry/Consent form must be completed, signed and included with EACH Poster Contest entry submitted on or before 5 p.m. on June 2, 2014. Guidelines and entry/consent form can be found at www.coronadoarts.com.
