With two cancellations due to rain, the Islander Boys’ Baseball team officially started their season last Wednesday against Eastlake High School. A new season means a new lineup on both sides of the inning. “Our pitching staff is deep with returning starters Luke McCollough, Dylan Miller, and Sean Miley,” says Coach Morgan Cummins. “Our bullpen will consist of Jon Tessier, Adam Sheehan, Luke Meloche, Justin Robertson, and Owen Jackson.” On the offensive lineup, Tobey Brown will be anchoring the team, as he is joined by his returning teammates: Jared Pratt, Heath Miller, Bobby Zajonc, Dylan Miller, and Kyle Phin. New to the lineup this year are Ryan Ward, Jon Tessier, Grant Gould, Evan Schnell, and Kanon Billings.

Playing against Eastlake High School, the Islanders were off to go a good start at the end of the first two innings, 2-0 (runs made by Pratt and Zajonc). In the sixth inning, Phin made one more run to go up 3-0, until Eastlake responded with another run. Going into the seventh (last) inning, Coronado would maintain their 3-1 lead but would later lose this lead, as Eastlake tied the game at 3-3. Due to darkness, the game was discontinued and is still to be determined if the game will resume. On the mound, Dylan Miller proved to be a force, striking out a total of eight batters.

The following Friday, Coronado traveled to Montgomery High School for what turned out to be another close game. With McCollough on the mound, he pitched an excellent game, letting Montgomery score only two runs. The Islanders were behind 0-2 in the sixth inning, until Ward and Brown scored two runs to tie the game. Tessier would then take the mound to strikeout three of Montgomery’s batters. The Islanders were now batting at the bottom of the last inning for one final opportunity to score a run. Fortunately, Heath Miller pulled through with a walk-off hit to win the game 3-2.

The Islanders concluded their week on Saturday against San Ysidro High School. They started off slow, but Pratt and Brown scored two runs at the bottom of the fourth inning. Miley took the mound and struck out a total of nine batters, letting only one run get by him in the sixth inning. The Islanders took the victory 2-1.

The team currently holds a record of two wins to one tie.

Upcoming Games:

Friday, March 1 vs. Mater Dei High School @ 3:00 PM (Away)
