Attention all you dog lovers! Earlier today I submitted a request for the City Council to consider allowing dogs off-leash at select parks in town for a six-month trial period.
The purpose of the trial period would be to evaluate the actual usage and impacts, if any, to the parks and surrounding neighborhoods. This information could be helpful if the City Council were to consider establishing a permanent dog park in the future.
With the exception of dog beach and the Cays dog run, the Coronado Municipal Code prohibits off-leash dogs at all other parks.
Results from a 2017 unscientific online survey of 1,100 Coronado residents showed 47% of respondents owned a dog and 55% of respondents would support an off-leash dog park, while 31% would oppose and 14% had no opinion. Even though these numbers are unscientific, I believe they speak to a desire by many in our community for more recreational options for their dogs.
We are fortunate to have several neighborhood parks in Coronado, however, some of these parks go unused during many daylight hours. These parks could potentially serve as an additional area for residents to exercise and socialize their dogs.
This request is just the first step to moving forward with a trial period.
