Ribbons on Leashes

RIBBONS ON LEASHES – Best for Police, Best for Pets

Please tie green and white ribbons on your leashes to support the family of Smokey, the family dog who was tased to death, and peacefully say Coronado needs a dedicated Animal Control Service. This situation is not fair to the Police or our pets. Having dedicated Animal Control is Best for Police, and Best for Pets.

Tie your own green and white ribbon on your leashes walking around town! If you need ribbon, please visit: Coldwell Banker at 1116 1st Street, Realty Executives Dillon on Isabella Ave., and on Orange: Wag N Tails, and Blue Jeans and Bikinis. Or make some available at YOUR business and post here!

The family of the dog who was tased to death by Coronado Police chose to grieve in private and not hold a memorial. Instead they want to see the system corrected. Less than a year ago the City decided to eliminate the dedicated Animal Control Service and the police department handles all animal calls. But, officers trained to fight crime should not be going on dog catching calls. Deploying the wrong asset in a situation is how mistakes are made and tasers are used to lasso dogs, thereby electrocuting them to death. Literally charging him so full of electricity that the dog finally has to stop and drops. Dead.

In this situation the police kept saying, “Animal Control was not available” and we have been thinking there was someone else to call and police were only as a last resort. But what those statements were REALLY saying is we no longer have Animal Control – the Police ARE our animal control – “Animal Control was not available” because it no longer exists. Let’s work with Police/PAWS/City Manager through the chain of command. Then as a community to the City Council. Then to the voters if we need to.

Help spread the word if you can. Honor the family with change for everyone’s pet.
