Pedestrian Crossing Sign Installed: Public Services’ Streets Division has installed a new pedestrian crossing sign at Prospect Place and Second Street, with lights to illuminate the crosswalk and blinking LEDs in an effort to improve pedestrian safety. The crossing sign was prompted in response to community concerns over the high levels of commuter traffic in the mornings in the area.
Active Transportation Plan: There is still time to participate in the online questionnaire for the Active Transportation Plan proposing programs and projects to improve walking and bicycling in Coronado. Visit https://www.surveymonkey.com/r/TV83N3Q to take the questionnaire. On Wednesday, February 7, drop by the Winn Room between 5:30 and 7:30 p.m. to review the proposed projects and programs for the Plan.
Sunset Park Improvements: Construction to improve Sunset Park began this week. Operations began with the set-up of screened fencing and other measures to prevent construction dirt and debris from leaving the area. Contractors also started the turf abatement process to allow for the removal of the existing grass from the site over the next two weeks. Work also will include the installation of a new sidewalk and pedestrian ramps along Ocean Drive. Sunset Park will be closed for public use during and after construction for a short period of time so that the new sod can take root. The park is expected to reopen by the end of April.
Sales Tax Third Quarter Report: The City has received a report on its sales tax receipts for its third quarter sales, from July to September 2017. The numbers are flat. Receipts were 2.9 percent below the same period in 2016. However, the major factor in the decline was a one-time tax allocation posted in the prior comparison year for a large general consumer goods purchase. Excluding that aberration, actual sales were down .4 percent. The report is produced by HDL Companies, which tracks sales and makes sure the numbers are correctly reported. The company also produces a quarterly report. Restaurants and hotels remain Coronado’s biggest sales tax generators. San Diego County as a whole saw an increase of 2.1 percent over the same time last year. The City receives one cent on the dollar in sales tax, contributing to the City’s General Fund revenue.
