Why We Love Coronado – Walking, Walking, Walking

Hundreds of Coronado enthusiasts have joined eCoronado.com in the last few weeks. It’s been amazing to see some of the reasons why residents and visitors alike consistently list ‘walking’ as one of the top benefits of Coronado. Now, I enjoy walking around the island as much as anyone else, but I wanted to take a few minutes and share with you my thoughts on why ‘walking’ around town ranks as a top benefit: 1. It’s Convenient Especially during the summer months when there are too many cars on the road here in town. It’s so easy to walk to the store, post office, beach, parks, restaurants, etc. 2. It’s Easy (Nice Flat Surface) There are only a couple small hills (minor inclines) in Coronado. The only time I even notice these is if I’m on my bike towing my 3 year old behind me. Usually coming back from Ferry Landing or the golf course path. 3. It Makes You Slow Down I love this reason, because I tend to move fast all the time. Ok, I tend to be busy all the time and therefore need to hurry from event to event. Walking helps me breath easier and take in the sights around me. I actually notice my neighbors flowers and nicely trimmed hedges. I notice the date stamps in the sidewalks all over town. I notice the views and skyline depending which way I’m walking. I notice things that I can’t notice zooming down the street in a car. Sometimes, I even capture some great Coronado photos or videos on my walks. 4. Bumping Into Friends / Neighbors On one walk to Orange Avenue the other day, I ran into 4 people I knew or recognized in a matter of 3 blocks. That’s amazing. It’s rare to go on a walk and not see an old friend, classmate of my kids or business partner. I can’t wait to have all these extra ‘parental eyes’ on my kids as they get into their adolescent years and start pushing the boundaries around town. 5. Saves Money Save your gas money and invest in a good pair of shoes. Let’s give the environment a break and avoid the car if we can. 6. Exercise Just think, there is a treadmill right outside your door. Plus, it has much better views that the inner walls of your house. When I used to live in the big city over the bridge, I would go days without walking around my town. Now in Coronado, there are weeks that I don’t hop in a car – and I love it. 7. Family Time Enjoy a great conversation with your friend or family member as you stroll around Coronado. Having two small kids makes car rides a bit less interactive or too close for comfort. I’ve noticed how well everyone gets along when they have their own space during our family walks. Sure, the kids are on scooters, but they still enjoy the time outside and always wait for mom and dad at the corners and alleys. Here I am on a walk in front of the Hotel del Coronado…see how happy I am?

I feel blessed to live in such a great place where I have the freedom and ability to walk around town. I’m so glad to see that many eCoronado.com members agree and state that in their profiles. If I’ve missed any other benefits, be sure to add your comments below. Steve Johnson Publisher, eCoronado.com
