A Chance Meeting–A Fast Friend
Jessie, Katie, Don and Jamie: Don is a Coronado native celebrating his 88th birthday today.
Two weeks ago my 11 year old and I were at an appointment close to Orange Avenue. I allowed my 13 year old and 9 year old to walk to Starbucks for a Friday treat until Jamie and I could catch up with them. When we walked in to the coffee shop, the two girls were sitting to the far left and engaged in conversation with a man I didn’t know.
Turns out that Don (we didn’t find out his last name) was born in Coronado in 1924 and graduated from Coronado High School with the class of 1942. He was a Math Teacher much of his life and travelled to quite a few places to teach. He moved back here about 10 years ago to take care of his then ailing mother who has since passed away. While we sat there and talked about Math, religion and computers, he taught my oldest how to count to 99 with just 10 fingers. When we told Don that Katie is a whiz at math, he proceeded to quiz her on things and she proceeded to impress him.
We talked for probably 90 minutes and then I took the picture you see above. Don teased, as he put his arms around my girls, “The family I never had.” I told him he can borrow them whenever he wants!
We looked for him at Starbuck’s last Friday and this Friday but didn’t see him. Today is his 88th birthday. We hope you see this Don and that you have a wonderful birthday.
