Bicycle and pedestrian safety education is coming to Coronado Schools.
Thanks to a $36,000 Safe Routes to School Education Grant the City received from the states Active Transportation Grant Program, the new education program will kick off this week with a meeting at the Coronado Unified School District.
The grant has allowed the City to hire Circulate San Diego, a nonprofit group specializing in Safe Routes to School education. Circulate San Diego will conduct a series of workshops and rodeos for parents and students at Village Elementary, Strand Elementary, Coronado Middle School and Coronado High School throughout this school year and next.
Coronado schools are fortunate to have a high number of students who bike and walk to school, both of which have been shown to improve student health and academic performance. However, it is hoped that the education efforts made possible by this grant will also help to improve safety for our students, teach skills training, and provide parents with the information they need to help their children safely bike and walk to school.
