Almost 8 years ago, the Friends of the Coronado Public Library opened a used book shop in the back of the public library. The book shop was given the name Second Hand Prose and proved to be a valuable asset to the Friends as well as the public library. Jan Camillo has been at Second Hand Prose since the opening. She arrives early each day to wipe clean all the donated books, sort through any new donations, and stock the shelves with books for purchase. She has given tirelessly through all these years to benefit the mission of the Friends of the Coronado Public Library. That mission includes providing funds for the Coronado Public Library to host special community programs, sponsor summer reading programs, enhance collections throughout the library, and contribute to the wonderful displays in the library. Without volunteers like Jan, some of these items would never be funded. On Saturday, March 10th, Mayor Casey Tanaka read a proclamation from the city of Coronado stating it was to be Jan Camillo day in honor of her services. Christian Esquevin, librarian, also spoke about Jan’s service and dedication. A bench was dedicated in the back corner of the library in her name as well. Jan is going to leave behind some of her duties but I am sure any customers might still see her at Second Hand Prose from time to time.
March 10th was proclaimed Jan Camillo day.
