Tourism Ireland gets Coronado landmarks to “go green to mark St. Patrick’s Day” as part of its Global Greening.
At dusk on Friday, March 17 (St. Patrick’s Day) the Hotel del Coronado and the Glorietta Bay Inn will join Tourism Ireland and add green lighting. The Hotel Del plans to have the smokestack be lit up in green and the Glorietta Bay Inn sign will be lit up in green.
Coronado will be recognized along with world class stadiums, statues, castles and towers going green to celebrate the national day.
This past weekend, Deputy Prime Minister to Ireland, Tánaiste, Frances Fitzgerald (she is equivalent in Ireland to the Vice President in the United States) enjoyed a private tour of the Hotel Del and was incredibly impressed. As perhaps the most iconic and internationally famous building associated with San Diego, she felt it would be wonderful to include it as a Global Greening site, which sees some of the most iconic buildings and sites in the world turn green on St. Patrick’s Day. It would be one of the first buildings in Southern California to be a part of the Global Greening campaign. Along with the significant international exposure this can bring Coronado, it would also be a wonderful recognition of the strong ties between Ireland and Southern California at this very special time of year for the 70 million people around the world that make up the Global Irish Diaspora.
John and Angela Byrne, distinguished guests from Kilkenny, Ireland, have joined us again this year as Goodwill Ambassadors representing Ireland. The Byrnes are engaged in the hospitality industry in Kilkenny and represent Irish Tourism. Angela is an accomplished writer and has written several best-selling books, launching both “Not Forgotten” and “Miss Fitzgerald” from San Diego. The Byrnes will be in town this weekend for the Global Greening.
