Sharp HospiceCare Benefit Regatta Raises $240,000 and Exceeds Fundraising Goal

SAN DIEGO — Sharp HospiceCare, Coronado Yacht Club and Cortez Racing Association hosted the Ninth Annual Sharp HospiceCare Benefit Regatta on Aug. 26 and 27, 2011, netting $240,000 and exceeding its fundraising goal of $225,000. The event benefits Sharp HospiceCare, an organization that provides comprehensive care and compassionate support for patients and their families struggling with a life-limiting illness.

All proceeds go directly to Sharp HospiceCare’s Homes for Hospice campaign, an initiative to build specialized homes throughout San Diego that combine around-the-clock hospice care with a quaint, home-like setting. A third hospice home is planned for the South Bay, as the Grossmont Hospital Foundation Board of Governors approves the launch of a new campaign to raise $2 million to fund the home.

“The overwhelming response we’ve received underlines the commitment that the San Diego community has for Sharp HospiceCare and its patients,” said Suzi K. Johnson, vice president of Sharp HospiceCare. We are grateful to our donors, sponsors and individuals who contributed to the success of our regatta. Thanks to their support, we are another step closer to building our next hospice home in the South Bay.”

Sharp HospiceCare currently operates two hospice homes, which are the only places of their kind in San Diego County. La Mesa’s LakeView home was the first to open in 2001. In 2008, Sharp HospiceCare opened its second hospice home – ParkView – in Del Cerro. These specially designed homes, located within residential neighborhoods feature private rooms for residents, a nursing station staffed 24-hours a day, and spacious living areas and outdoor garden for visiting family members and friends.

The regatta festivities on Friday night at Hotel Del Coronado included a sell-out crowd of 410 dinner guests. On Saturday, nearly 50 sailboats competed to the delight of 350 attendees watching the race from aboard 27 host yachts. Community volunteers Maggie Watkins of Best Best & Krieger LLP and Bill Quealy of KPMG LLP served as the 2010 Regatta Event Co-Chairs.
