Senior Spotlight: Meet Mrs. Karen Moore

Mrs. Karen Moore, a mother and foster parent, is a member of the Coronado Senior Center and arrived in Coronado 11 years ago as many Arizona residents do, driven away by the 120 degree heat!

Mrs. Moore is an eloquent and active person with a long career as a medical technologist. She obtained her college degree from Arizona State University after she transferred there from the University of Denver when her father moved the family from Denver, Colorado working with the United States Public Health Service.

Born in New York City, this un-retirable member of our community has worked her way through several positions including a stint as one of the first women to join the Planning Commission in Phoenix, Arizona. After giving retirement a try, she volunteered for the Parks and Recreation Department in Arizona. Her work was recognized when she was named National Recreation Association Volunteer of the Year (she received her award along with journalist and CBS correspondent Charles Kuralt) and sent to New Orleans to accept her award.

Moore also worked for several City Council members in Phoenix, Arizona. She then came out of retirement to join the workforce again specializing in elder care before she and her husband, an attorney who still commutes to Arizona to tend to his practice, decided to permanently move to Coronado in 2001.

In 1999 while on a casual drive through our pristine beach city, Mr. Moore fell for a charming home built in 1927 by famed architect Chris Cosgrove. Shortly after they purchased the home, they also applied and were granted historic designation of the house.

Karen Moore has attempted to retire not once, but three times, and she’ll proudly tell you she has yet to be able to fully embrace this stage of her life. “Retirement didn’t suite me,” she told me during our interview. This was the reason she again decided to work and got a job as manager of the Coronado Veterinary Hospital for five years where she was able to use her administrative as well as medical tech background.

Today, Mrs. Moore is still at it. The energetic grandmother of four grandchildren established her own business after helping friends out with estate sales and realizing this was something she could also do. So, when Karen isn’t playing Majhong on Wednesdays or doing water aerobics three times a week, you’ll find her sorting and selling as the owner of Coronado Estate Sales.
