The simple purpose of this letter is to thank local David Spatafore and Blue Bridge Hospitality (BBH), his restaurant group. They are locally known for Leroy’s, Maretalia, and Stake, just to name a few.
They deserve applause because they joined the Surfrider Foundation’s Ocean Friendly Restaurants program, an important and growing movement that prioritizes the marine environment when doing business.
Specifically, without government interference, they stopped using plastics and Styrofoam in all but one of their businesses (it’s hard to eat a triple scoop of vanilla in a flimsy paper cup). They did it because it was the right thing to do. This is BBH putting the health of our community and environment first.
According to Surfrider, the ocean is filled with 5.25 trillion pieces of plastic, some of which is competing with plankton at the bottom of the food chain. Along with marine life, plastic is choking our ocean and bay, two beautiful bodies of water that surround our town.
To me, this story illustrates well that what is good for the environment can indeed be good for business. I sure hope that this is the first of many more who join the Ocean Friendly Restaurants program in Coronado. Thank you David for your environmental stewardship!
