Mirror Mirror shines with supreme casting, elaborate costumes, brilliant cinematography, and a fresh story line. It is the new perspective approach to an old story. Originally written exactly 200 years ago by the Grimm brothers, this new version of Snow White is a spin on social as well as political issues of today.
Masterfully played by Julia Roberts, the narcissistic Queen, on a quest to maintain control as the ruler of the town. An oppressive stepmother to Snow White (Lilly Collins), the Queen is ruthless and leaves the once flourishing and happy town, poor from all the taxing she proposes for her lavish parties and opulent lifestyle. The Queen’s main assistant, Brighton (Nathan Lane), must follow all of the Queen’s ridiculous and tyrannical commands, even one to kill Snow White in the forest.
This movie also tells the tale of the budding romance between Snow White and Prince Alcott of Valencia (Armie Hammer), who cross paths after he was robbed by seven bandit dwarves on stilts – a whimsical premise all in itself. This version sees the Seven Dwarves as complex characters, all with individual personalities, backgrounds and even ethnicities, a true reflection of society. The Mirror, one of the most important characters, acts as the Queen’s conscience who ends up teaching her a valuable lesson on vanity and greed.
The movies’ overall message is about conquering your fears, fighting for what you believe in, being selfless, and doing what’s right. Even though it’s all about female power, the element of chivalry still remains. And even though this is a retelling of the popular, kid-friendly original, Mirror Mirror is a family movie with plenty of deep and intricate themes to give grown-ups plenty to think about and enjoy.
Overall, this movie gave the original Snow White a modern twist leaving us with the feel of courage and accomplishment, all with a fairytale ending. It’s a great magical-comedy for the whole family!
