Naval Base Coronado has been selected as the winner of the Commander, Navy Region Southwest Installation Excellence Award for Large Installations.
The award recognizes bases for superior support to the fleet, cost savings, and innovative improvements to facilities, quality of life, safety, and environmental sustainability.
“Competition this year was tough, and all of our bases have had some truly outstanding accomplishments,” said the Commander of Navy Region Southwest, Rear Adm. Bette Bolivar “However, the exceptional work by the Coronado team really stood out.”
In recent years, base personnel have led efforts to curb the use of energy and water. Personnel reduced the base’s total energy footprint by over 48% for more than a $10M annual savings, while reducing water usage by 40% compared to the established base line.
The base is the primary logistics hub to the Pacific and the busiest non-AMC terminal in the Navy. It is responsible for maintaining the readiness of 27 piers across three NBC installations. Naval Air Station North Island, one of the eight properties that fall under the Naval Base Coronado umbrella, celebrated its 102nd birthday recently.
“I could not be more proud of this team,” said the naval base’s Commanding Officer, Capt. Tim Slentz. I think people just assume everything here is automatically awesome simply because of our location in Coronado. However, they could not be more wrong. It takes a tremendous amount of team effort to keep this base safe and functioning, as well as to meet the needs of our tenant commands. This team makes it happen, and I am incredibly grateful.”
The base will next represent the Southwest region in the competition for the best large installation Navy-wide. That contest is scheduled to be decided by January 2020.
Naval Base Coronado supports the Navy’s mission and drive for increased combat readiness by providing complementary and effective infrastructure in the form of runways, piers, training ranges, and facilities to Fleet operating forces. The base also delivers superlative quality of life and wellness services for Sailors and their families.
