FOCUS (Friends of Children United Society) is an all-volunteer, 501 (c) (3) nonprofit organization committed to the mission of raising funds to aid in the comfort and betterment of abused, homeless, disabled, disadvantaged, foster and military children within San Diego County. FOCUS is unique in that they never give money to any of the children’s agencies or individual children that they support, but rather determine their specific needs and then purchase and deliver the items, thereby eliminating administrative costs. They support many agencies throughout the county, some of which are Voices For Children, The Armed Forces YMCA-San Diego, The San Diego Rescue Mission, Monarch High School, San Pasqual Academy and Urban Street Angels/8 West. In 2016, FOCUS spent $125,000 in purchasing necessary items for children.
FOCUS raises money through donations, membership dues and fundraisers. Their major fundraiser, usually held in the Spring, includes a dinner, live entertainment, dancing, and silent and live auctions with all proceeds used for providing needed items to the children. This year’s “Kickin’ It Up For Kids” event has a Country Western Theme and features a barbecue dinner followed by entertainment by Neon Circus – Brooks and Dunn Tribute Band. It is being held on Sunday, March 26, 2017, from 5:00-9:00 PM, at the Coronado Community Center (Nautilus Room) at 1845 Strand Way.
The evening will begin with a social hour where beer, wine, margaritas and appetizers will be served while guests bid on a large array of silent auction items and purchase tickets for an opportunity drawing. This will be followed by dinner provided by Phil’s BBQ Restaurant, the live auction, entertainment and dancing. Dress is casual and Country Western inspired outfits are welcome and encouraged.
