Coronado Rotary Four-Way Speech Contest Offers Students Cash Prizes and Opportunity to Strengthen Speaking Skills

Rotary International logoCoronado High School and CoSA students in grades 9 through 12 are invited to enter the 2017 Rotary International Four-Way Speech Contest. The Rotary Club of Coronado competitions will be held in February with the club winner receiving $200 and moving on to higher level competition.

In 2016, Coronado School of the Arts Musical & Drama tenth grade student, Lydia Mellor, finished in First Place in the Coronado Rotary Club competition. Lydia went on to win the southern regional competition and Rotary District 5340 Finals competition. Lydia’s cash awards totaled almost $1600.

The Rotary Four-Way Speech Contest encourages high school students to prepare and give 5-7 minute speeches that apply the Four-Way Test to everyday activities and issues.

The Four-Way Test asks the following questions of the things we think, say, or do:

  • Is it the TRUTH?
  • Is it FAIR to all concerned?
  • Will it build GOODWILL and better FRIENDSHIPS?
  • Will it be BENEFICIAL to all concerned?

One of the world’s most widely printed and quoted statements of nonpartisan and nonsectarian ethics, the Four-Way Test has been translated into more than 100 languages.

Participants have an opportunity to choose subjects they are passionate about and present their speeches for judging at Rotary Club semi-finals on February 7 and 8. Four speakers will be selected to vie for cash awards at the Coronado Club Championship on February 22: First Place $200; Second Place $100; Finalists $50 each.

This spring the Coronado Club winner will advance to the next highest level contest with opportunities to participate in Rotary District level finals with additional cash prizes.
