On Saturday, June 17th, beginning at 9 am, the Coronado Rotary Club will hold its 20th Annual Low Tide Ride & Stride through the cooperation of the US Navy, the City of Coronado, and the California State Parks Department. Registration for the event is at lowtideride.com.
Just once a year the US Navy makes a special exception for a thousand bikers, runners, and walkers to experience an breathtaking and protected area of beach between Imperial Beach and Coronado’s North Beach. The annual Low Tide Ride and Stride event is a completely unique, family-oriented experience that cannot be replicated anywhere else in the country.
Offering challenges to the ardent athlete and excitement for the youngsters, participants have an opportunity to travel along a stretch of beach which is usually used for Navy procedures and Navy SEAL training and otherwise closed to the public. Low Tide Ride & Stride follows the beach line from the start at YMCA Camp Surf in Imperial Beach to the finish line just beyond the Hotel Del Coronado at Coronado’s North Beach, at Sunset Park.
The race coincides with the lowest tide of the month, so running, walking or biking is easy and enjoyable for all ages. At the end of the race is a fun, family-oriented party with kids’ games, music and giveaways. All participants receive a medal and long sleeved T-shirt. Additional awards will be given to 1st, 2nd & 3rd place finishers in several age categories for both runners and bikers.
Rotary has a long tradition of supporting the military and is proud to dedicate this race to those who made the commitment of Service Above Self. Proceeds of the event will be donated towards local Wounded Veteran causes such as ARMED SERVICES C-5, Warrior Foundation, SEAL Foundation, Fisher House Foundation, Workshop for Warriors, and Wounded Warrior Tennis Camp.
The remaining proceeds will be donated to Rotary causes such as ABC Youth Foundation, Barrio Logan College Institute, Big Brothers Big Sisters, Camp Able, Camp Patriot Corp, Feed the Needy, FOCUS, Honor Flight WWII VET, Lambs Players Outreach, Miracle League of San Diego, Operation Clear Vision, PAVE, Outdoor Reach, Relay for Life, Salvation Army Homeless Outreach, San Pasqual Academy, United Through Reading, USO San Diego, Veterans Housing Initiative, Voices for Children, YMCA Camp Surf, and Wampler Foundation.
Twenty years ago Rotarian Bob Kranz spearheaded the event that has grown from its humble beginning of 120 cyclists to 1,000 participants. On May 30, 1998 Honorary Chairman Jim Laslavic, sports anchor and Coronado Rotarian, served as starter for the “Low Tide Ride”, which has become a highly anticipated annual event and a worthwhile fundraising opportunity.
