- Fire Chief Mike Blood to Retire October 2: After working for the City of Coronado for 28 years and a total of 30 years in the fire service, Coronado Fire Chief Mike Blood provided his retirement notice this week to the City Manager. His retirement will be effective October 2, 2017. A schedule is currently being prepared for an open recruitment for the position. The Fire Chief oversees a department of 41 full time employees from both the Fire Service and Beach Lifeguards. Coronado provides fire protection, paramedic services, emergency ambulance transportation, and all-hazards emergency preparedness and response.
- Condo Fire Response: A fire that started in a wall between two condominium units on First Street near Orange Avenue on May 10, brought out 19 fire vehicles from the City and surrounding agencies. The fire was reported at 2:46 p.m. No injuries were reported and seven residents were displaced. Firefighters on scene located the fire in a unit currently undergoing renovations and discovered it spreading to two adjacent condos. A second alarm was then requested, which provided additional firefighting apparatus and personnel, as common practice for a high-rise fire. Firefighters fully contained the fire in 1.5 hours. The Red Cross provided assistance. Roads around the building, including First and Orange, were closed to traffic as Coronado Police assisted with traffic control and assisting residents in the lobby area. Damage was estimated at $200,000.
