The San Diego Watercolor Society (SDWS) is an association of member artists who work in a variety of water media: watercolor, gouache, and acrylic.   It is an entirely volunteer operation, with members handling all aspects of monthly shows, staffing in the gallery,  and so on.  We also provide workshops from experts on all aspects of watercolor media, go out together on monthly and weekly plein air “paintouts,” and with support via a grant from the City of San Diego, provide “outreach” watercolor lessons for students  within the San Diego Unified School district.
Joanie Captain has been an SDWS member for about 10 years. She obtained a Bachelors degree in Art from SDSU and a Master’s degree in Fine Art (drawing and painting) from the Academy of Art University. She keeps very busy painting and teaching art classes. Joanie’s favorite subjects are the human figure and face, and the ocean. She works in oil, watercolor, graphite, ink, and pastel. Her work has been shown at SDWS, the SD Fair, and in the Coronado Library.
