- Coronado Supports SB 480, Bridge Safety: Earlier this week, Coronado via its state lobbyist provided testimony in support of Senate Bill 480 (Hueso). The bill requires 1 percent of California Department of Transportation miscellaneous revenue be expended for feasibility, environmental and engineering studies pertaining to bridge safety. The bill, which would earmark about $600,000 for this purpose, was passed out of the Senate Committee on Transportation and Housing. Coronado was the only municipality asked to testify. Previously, the City Council endorsed a letter of support for the legislation that was provided to the bill’s author Senator Ben Hueso.
- Spring Clean-up Event: Don’t forget to set your bulky items out at the curb next week. The annual Spring Cleanup Event is set for the week of May 1 through May 5. Residents may dispose of unwanted items such as broken appliances, furniture, old mattresses, tree branches (must be tied into two-by-four-foot bundles). Place the items you’d like picked up out on the curb with your regular trash containers on your regularly scheduled collection day during the cleanup event. No contractor or landscaper debris please. The City reminds the community about its recycle scavenging ordinance. The Police Department may now issue a ticket to people caught removing recycling items set out for pick-up.
- Crime Data Report: New mid-year crime statistics published by the San Diego Association of Governments found that the number of homicides, aggravated assaults and motor vehicle thefts are up countywide from 2015 to 2016, but the number of rapes, robberies and burglaries is down. The report lists countywide figures over the 37-year period of 1980 through 2016. The 2016 violent crime rate per 1,000 County residents was 3.33, and the property crime rate was 18.66. Both rates were the second lowest recorded since SANDAG began preparing annual regional crime reports in 1980. It is important to note that San Diego County remains a very safe place to live. The most recent figures show the City of Coronado had a 5 percent drop in both the overall crime rate and the property crime rate. The City had a nearly 4 percent property crime rate hike over last year but continues to have one of the lowest violent crime rates in the region with an Annualized FBI Index Violent Crime Rate of 1.03 crimes per 1,000. The most recent figures show that no other city had a lower rate than Coronado.
