As a co-chair of the YES on Prop E campaign, I have received inquiries from time to time as to the nature of the folks that are working together to pass Prop E in Coronado.
The campaign in favor of Prop E is a grass roots effort broadly supported by people throughout the Coronado community. Teachers, parents, seniors, homeowners, and military, civic and business leaders all have joined the campaign in order to work to protect OUR children, OUR schools and OUR community. The Prop E campaign also has been endorsed by the conservative San Diego Union-Tribune. Why? Because, the U-T editorial board studied the mechanics underlying Prop E, and the arguments both pro and con, and it concluded that there is compelling and practical wisdom behind this measure. First, the U-T noted that there is a real need for the Prop E funds due to a funding shortage created by the State’s new funding formula. Second, the U-T noted that Prop E provides a fiscally conservative solution that will use only low interest short term debt, and that Prop E will not expose Coronado taxpayers to long term debt. Finally, the U-T noted that the Coronado Unified School District is well managed. The U-T concluded that the school district deserves a YES vote on PROP E on June 3rd.
Some have asked about how the YES on Prop E campaign is being financed. The answer is simple: through a collection of mostly small contributions from people like you and me. The vast majority of the funds collected to support the campaign have been in amounts of $200 or less, and close to all have come from private citizens resident in Coronado. All contributions (including contributions of non-cash items, such as cookies and snacks provided to volunteers calling at our phone bank, miscellaneous copying charges paid for by some contributors, and even the value of appetizer dishes brought to our campaign kickoff event back in March) have been reported in accordance with the requirements of the California Fair Political Practices Act.
