Mutual Aid Assignment: Early on Friday, November 9, Coronado Fire Engine 36 with four personnel aboard responded as a part of a strike team to the Hill Fire in Ventura County. During their deployment, they have been engaged in active firefighting activities in various communities, which occurred with little rest for the first couple of days. Their tasks have included an attack on new a new fire in the area. They also have worked to control fires in various structures at the Woolsey Fire. The City’s costs will be reimbursed by the state. The firefighters were released Friday, November 16, and arrived home safely later that day.
Upcoming City Council Items: Two items on the upcoming City Council agenda may draw interest from the community. Council members will discuss what they should consider when selecting potential off-leash dog park sites in the City. Staff will recommend the Council consider the proposed warrant system, including site selection criteria and design amenities, based on industry best practices in dog park design. The selection criteria has been developed without targeting any specific, existing Coronado park. Another item on the agenda that may be of interest to many in Coronado is the awarding of contracts for the design and fabrication/installation of a replacement community directory sign at Spreckels Park. The public is welcome to provide input. The Council meets at 4 p.m. at City Hall, 1825 Strand Way, on Tuesday, November 20.
Dangerous Tree Removal: A large Sugar Gum Eucalyptus tree was removed Tuesday, November 13, after a recent review found it at high-risk of falling. After the recent failure of a more than 100-year-old, large Italian Stone Pine tree at Spreckels Park, the City hired a third-party arborist to evaluate all the trees at the park. The arborist found most of the Sugar Gum Eucalyptus trees to be at risk. The Sugar Gum at the corner of C Avenue and Sixth Street was given the high-risk rating. This has prompted the City, with reaffirmation from the City Council on Tuesday, November 6, to remove the tree as soon as possible.
Pursuit and Arrest: Monday, November 12, at 9:24 a.m., a 37-year-old man took the police department’s remotely monitored bicycle and led officers in a pursuit into Lemon Grove where he fled on foot and was later apprehended in a nearby apartment complex. He was booked into jail and charged with grand theft, possession of stolen property, and felony evading officers. His bail was set at $50,000. This is the 85th arrest since the remotely monitored bicycle program started four years ago.
Pedestrian Ramps: The contractor on a project to upgrade the existing pedestrian ramps on B and C avenues from Sixth Street to Ynez Place continued this week. Work is being done to bring the ramps up to current Americans With Disabilities Act requirements. Work this week includes demolition and concrete finishing. This is a 30-working day contract and construction is anticipated to be complete by December 20.
