Little Free Library Ribbon Cutting

The LFLs are managed by community volunteers who keep them stocked with books and well maintained. The FOL is seeking volunteers to assist with LFL “stewardship” duties. Each LFL box has at least one volunteer steward, who monitors the box weekly. Stewards must be FOL members.

The Friends of the Coronado Public Library (FOL) held a ribbon cutting for a Little Free Library (LFL) on the north side of the Hotel Del adjacent to the sidewalk at the intersection of R. H. Dana Place and Ocean Boulevard (near the bike racks and bench).

Mayor Bailey cut the ribbon held by FOL Board Member Dan Hunting and Noah Schmid, LFL Project Leader. Also in attendance were City Manager Blair King, Library Director Christian Esquevin, FOL Board members, Trustees from the Library Board, Boy Scout Troop 806 Adult Leaders, and FOL volunteers.

Little Free LibraryLittle Free Libraries are 2 foot by 2 foot wooden boxes atop a post, and serve as a depository for the exchange of free books for the community. The concept of the LFL’s began in 2009 as a tribute by a son for his deceased mother. He built an outdoor box for books that people could take and share. Today the Little Free Library movement and non-profit organization have become his mission.

The FOL has sponsored four LFL’s in Coronado that were designed and built as an Eagle Scout project by members of local Boy Scout Troop 806, and are placed in following locations:

  • First Street at B Avenue
  • Coronado Cays South Park across from the Fire Station
  • Community Center entrance at Stand Way
  • West Ocean Boulevard at R. H. Dana Place

The Friends of the Coronado Public Library encourage you to stop by one of the LFLs to “take a book – return a book.”
