SUMMARY:Spring Bike Rodeo
DESCRIPTION:Training to emphasize electric bikes.\nThe City is co-hosting three bicycle safety clinics\, called Bike Rodeos\, in April. The rodeos are for all students but there will be a special emphasis on those with e-bikes. Electric bikes have become very popular among Coronado youth who have been using them to get to school in growing numbers. E-bikes are fast due to their motors and there are special rules riders should know to ensure everyone’s safety. \nSimilar to bikes\, e-bikes are considered vehicles\, and users must obey all traffic rules including stopping at all stop signs and red traffic signals. E-bike riders should be proactive and check their speed\, brake earlier\, and remember that it’s still a bike. Crashes can happen on any bike\, but higher speeds are involved with e-bikes. It’s always best when you’re out riding around town to keep standard bike safety and courtesy in mind. \nThe City\, Coronado Unified School District\, San Diego Bicycle Coalition\, and Coronado MainStreet invite students and parents to attend one of three bike rodeos to learn about the rules of the road\, register bikes and enter raffle contests. Thanks Garage Buona Forchetta\, Holland’s Bicycles\, Gepetto’s and Blue Bridge Hospitality for co-sponsoring this important event. \nAll bikes\, e-bikes\, scooters\, and skateboards are welcome. Learn about the rules of the road and bike safety! All local students and parents are welcome. Win raffle prizes such as helmets\, bike locks\, and Coronado Currency. \nRegister your bicycle with online bike registry\, bikeindex.org. Bring your vehicle\, helmet\, and signed photo/video waiver. \n

SUMMARY:FILM FORUM CORONADO: "Charade"
DESCRIPTION:Coronado Public Library\, in partnership with the Coronado Island Film Festival\, presents Film Forum Coronado\, taking place the first and third Wednesday of each month at 6 pm in the library’s Winn Room. Film expert Ralph DeLauro provides a brief introduction to each film and leads a discussion afterwards\, often including pointers about how lighting or camera angles contribute to a scene’s mood or propel the story. \nApril 20: “CHARADE” (1963. 113 minutes) \nStanley Donen goes dangerous and delicious in this glittering emblem of sixties style and wit. An elegant\, mysterious Cary Grant and Givenchy-clad Audrey Hepburn are pursued through the City of Lights for gold stolen during wartime. The comedic thriller co-stars James Coburn\, Walter Matthau and George Kennedy. \n

SUMMARY:Tea with the Spreckels
DESCRIPTION:  \n \nEnjoy an afternoon with special guests Lillie and John D. Spreckels. The Spreckels were two of Coronado\, and San Diego’s\, most powerful residents in the late 19th and early 20th century. With fine music\, historical tidbits\, and light refreshments\, this event will bring a bit of Coronado’s past into our today. \nNashville playwright Debbie Mathis Watts and veteran actor Tom Dolan will don customs as Lillie and John as they portray this legendary couple whose leadership in the late 19th and early 20th centuries brought unprecedented prosperity to San Diego and Coronado. \nDebbie\, as Lillie\, will perform during the tea historical monologues\, punctuated with piano-vocal renditions of classical piano performances just like John and Lillie Spreckels could have presented in their music room in their Coronado home on Glorietta Bay. Lillie was the wife of a powerful man but did not live in John’s shadow. Lillie\, an accomplished singer from the garden state of New Jersey originally\, she brought her flower growing skills\, first to Hawaii\, where Queen Liliokalani shared some of her flower secrets and then settling in Coronado with her husband John. \nDebbie’s book\, “John and Lillie Spreckels: Diaries\, Desserts\, and San Diego Dreams\,” includes fictionalized diary entries that reveal John and Lillie’s deep love for each other\, with stories from their seafaring adventures along the West Coast. The Spreckels contributions to the San Diego region include the railway\, the Hotel Del Coronado\, The Spreckels Library\, and The Spreckels Theatre. Because much of the couple’s fortune was made from the sugar-refining business\, Debbie decided to add a recipe section that includes some of the desserts Lillie may have prepared for her beloved husband and children. This book will be available for purchase at the event. \nReservations are required. Reserve your space HERE for this one of a kind event.

And\, that history is easiest to see on foot – when you have a chance to linger in front of a tiny\, shingled house\, perhaps\, and meet the resident as he comes out into the yard to water his roses and tells you about the multiple generations who have lived in the home. Or\, when you seemingly stumble upon the magical house from which the Wizard of Oz was born. \nWe’re proud to host you on Coronado’s premier walking tour. Every tour purchase supports the Coronado Historical Association and its mission. Thank you for your support. \nEvery Sunday at 11 am & Thursday at 1 pm\nLocation: Coronado Historical Association\,\n1100 Orange Ave\, Coronado\, CA 92118\nAdmission: Adults $20 | Children (12 & under) $5\nBUY TICKETS HERE\nTours are approximately 90 minutes and two miles at a comfortable pace. SUMMARY:Second Sea Level Rise Virtual Workshop
DESCRIPTION:The City is hosting its second virtual workshop on Coronado’s Sea Level Rise planning process. The City invites the community to attend the workshop via Zoom at 5 pm on April 21 to learn more. \n \nThe first step was a Vulnerability Assessment that used a model to evaluate how sea level rise could impact the City over time. A Vulnerability Study was completed and presented to the public last summer. The City recently released the second planning document\, the Adaptation Plan\, which includes a menu of potential strategies. The meeting will review the Vulnerability Study but focus on the adaptation measures. The combined draft Sea Level Rise Vulnerability Assessment and Adaptation Plan document is available on CommentCoronado.org. \nPlease provide any comments to Project Planner Jane Thornton at jthornton@coronado.ca.us by May 18.

SUMMARY:Friends of the Library Membership Meeting
DESCRIPTION:The Friends of the Coronado Public Library will host an annual Membership Meeting at the Coronado Public Library Winn Room on Friday April 22 from 5:30 until 7 pm. This is an important meeting for the Friends of the Library as a vote will be held among the membership in attendance to approve the slate of officers for the Friends’ Board. Proposed Bylaws changes also need to be approved\, making changes to membership levels and life memberships. Approximately one-half hour of business should be part of the membership meeting business. \nCollectible books will be for sale after the meeting\, and a raffle will also be held. The Membership meeting precedes the Saturday Book Sale which will be held for one day only on April 23\, from 9 am until 4 pm. The Book Sale location will be held on the grounds outside the Winn Room adjacent to the Coronado Library. The usual types of items will be for sale: books of all types including non-fiction and text-books\, children’s books\, art books\, best-sellers and mysteries\, collectible books\, audio-books\, DVDs\, and various gift items. \nThe change to a one-day sale is being caused by several reasons. Donations of books have not been accepted recently due to Covid\, so the inventory is lower. At the same time the increasing costs of renting tents\, tables\, and other equipment associated with conducting the multi-day book-sale has reduced the income that is raised to help support the Coronado Library. Thus\, setting up at Spreckels Park with the usual rented equipment for three days was not deemed the best way to achieve the Friends’ fundraising goals. \nThe Friends of the Coronado Public Library was formed in 1970 as a non-profit 501(c)3 organization to support the Coronado Library and its various activities. This includes a host of public programs\, children’s and teen activities\, concerts\, art\, and certain collections. \n  \n  \n  \n
