SUMMARY:Autumn Concert Series: Nico Hueso
DESCRIPTION:The Library’s Autumn Concert Series takes place on Fridays from September 5 to October 31. Each concert will begin at 1 p.m. in the Winn Room. Doors will open 15 minutes prior to the performance. On September 12\, we will have Nico Hueso performing on the viola. \n\nNico received his Bachelor’s of Music in performance from Kennesaw State University while studying under Atlanta Symphony violist Cathy Lynn. Mr. Hueso has also studied with renowned performers Helen Kim\, Juan Ramirez\, Francisco Caban\, David Grimal\, Elias Goldstein\, and Henry Hutchinson. Hueso has participated in several prestigious music festivals including the Pablo Casals Chamber Music Festival in Prades\, France\, the Festival International de Huapango in Panuco\, Mexico\, the Programa Musica de Camera para Niños\, FOSJA in San Juan\, Puerto Rico\, and the GMEA All College Orchestra 2011 as principal violist and soloist. Mr. Hueso has performed in master classes with the Ying Quartet\, Eighth Blackbird\, Pacifica Quartet\, and Chilingirian Quartet\, and he has been a finalist in the MTNA Chamber music competition. His extensive orchestral & chamber music experience includes performances at the Central Conservatory in Beijing\, the People’s Theatre in Xi’an\, and for the Confucius Institute of China\, along with the Atlanta Virtuosi\, Albany Symphony Orchestra\, Georgia Symphony Orchestra\, Old Globe Theatre\, La Jolla Playhouse\, Camarada Chamber Ensemble\, the Athenaeum\, Opera Neo\, performing recitals at UCSD alongside Doctoral candidates\, members of the San Diego Symphony\, California Ballet\, along with principal players of the New York Philharmonic\, Chicago Symphony\, Vienna State Opera\, amongst many others. \nIn addition to classical viola\, Hueso freelances and records in multiple genres as a violinist\, guitarist\, & electric bassist; he has been a guest soloist with the rock band Kansas in 2011 for their Symphony Tour\, has performed with Placido Domingo\, rock band Disturbed\, members of Mariachi Vargas de Tecalitclán & Nuevo Tecalitclán\, tribute groups commemorating artists such as Otis Redding\, and has collaborated with a number of up-and-coming pop and country artists\, lending his skills as both a composer and studio musician.  In addition to keeping a rigorous teaching and freelancing schedule\, Hueso enjoys arranging\, improvising and performing chamber music with his colleagues from Atlanta\, San Diego\, and Puerto Rico Symphonies.

The event in September brings the community together for prevention and awareness\, particularly for the Military community\, as well as prevention from the tragedy the Coronado Bridge may bring. Captain Owen will be speaking on the U.S. Navy Nurse Corps. \nNurses have served in the Navy since 1908 in a variety of duty stations\, stateside and overseas\, on board hospital ships\, aircraft carriers\, as flight nurses\, on rapidly deployable medical and surgical teams\, in fleet hospitals\, in the White House\, and even in Yosemite National Park. No walk-ins will be admitted. \nIf you have any questions\, please email info@coronadohistory.org or call 619-435-7242. \n  \n \nAbout the Speaker: \nCaptain Nancy Owen received her Diploma in Nursing from Saint Joseph Hospital School of Nursing\, Lancaster\, Pennsylvania in 1972.  In 1982 she received a Bachelor of Science Degree in Nursing from the University of San Diego\, and in 1990 a Master of Science Degree in Critical Care Nursing from the University of Pennsylvania. \nShe joined the U.S. Navy Nurse Corps in 1972 during the Vietnam era and served for nearly twenty-five years in a variety of assignments stateside and overseas including a tour at the former U.S. Naval Hospital\, Subic Bay\, Republic of the Philippines.  From March to August 1994\, Captain Owen served as Director\, Nursing Services\, U.S. Fleet Hospital\, Zagreb\, Croatia\, a 60 bed tent hospital on the tarmac of the Zagreb airport.  She was one of 150 medical personnel from Fleet Hospital SIX who deployed in March 1994 in support of OPERATION PROVIDE PROMISE and over 40\,000 United Nations Protection Forces in the former Republic of Yugoslavia. \nCaptain Owen retired from the U.S. Navy in September 1997.  Her last duty station was Naval Medical Center San Diego\, where she served as Special Assistant to the Commander for Patient Relations\, responsible for responding to Congressional inquiries and patient letters of concern and appreciation. \nCaptain Owen is a longtime member of and served as President of the Navy Nurse Corps Association of Southern California from 2000-2009. She has been the editor of their newsletter\, The Oakleaf\, for the past 15 years.   She is a member and current secretary of the California Veterans Home\, Chula Vista Support Foundation\,  Charter Member of the Women in Military Service for America Memorial Foundation\, life member of the Military Officer’s Association of America\, and life member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 2422. \nShe is married to Commander Wayne Owen\, Supply Corps\, USN (retired).  They have an adult son\, Paul. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n

SUMMARY:Autumn Concert Series: Lori Bell
DESCRIPTION:The Library’s Autumn Concert Series takes place on Fridays from September 5 to October 31. Each concert will begin at 1 p.m. in the Winn Room. Doors will open 15 minutes prior to the performance. On September 19\, we will have Lori Bell on the flute. She will be playing From Bach to Bebop\, including songs by Bach\, Telemann\, Piazolla\, Debussy\, Hoover\, and more. \n\nAcclaimed flutist and a three time Global Music Award recipient\, Brooklyn native Lori Bell is a flutist and composer of admirable depth and broad musical sympathies. A resident of San Diego\, she has contributed to the development of higher standards of performance while earning acclaim from both peers and critics for her artistry on stage and in recordings. \nIn 2016 Lori paid heartfelt tribute to her family and birthplace on her critically acclaimed album ‘Brooklyn Dreaming’ earning four star ratings from Jazz Journal UK\, Jazz Times\, the Los Angeles Times (four and a half stars) and Downbeat\, which chose it as “Best Albums of 2016.” Huffington Post also chose ‘Brooklyn Dreaming’ for their “Best of Jazz 2016”. Bill Milkowski wrote in the March 2016 issue of Downbeat: “Bell flaunts prodigious chops on both C flute and alto flute\, though her pen might be mightier than her sword. Her originals all reveal a wide harmonic palette\, a sophisticated rhythmic sensibility and a refined sense of dynamics\, along with an urge to swing.” Veteran jazz critic Scott Yanow chose it as one of his Top 25 Best jazz CD’s of 2016. It also won a Global Music Award for Outstanding Achievement for compositions and arrangements. \nHer most recent album project released in 2024 is a tribute to the legendary saxophonist and composer\, Joe Henderson. The Lori Bell Quartet – Recorda Me; Remembering Joe Henderson was selected at Jazz Congress in NYC for Jukebox Jury\, received international press\, and was selected Top 10 Jazz Critics Poll in Cadence Magazine\, Top 10 Essential Releases by jazz critic Scott Yanow\, and Best Jazz Albums of 2024 in All About Jazz. \nLori has toured in Asia\, including Singapore and Hong Kong. She has also performed in high profile ensemble settings at The Kennedy Center in Washington\, DC\, SOKA Performing Arts Center\, The Wadsworth Theatre at UCLA\, Birdland NYC\, The Blue Note NYC\, SFJAZZ in the Joe Henderson Lab\, and most recently\, on a project of jazz arrangements and classical compositions for the Los Angeles Philharmonic Music Library. She has performed three times at the Gala for the National Flute Association. \nEqually fluent in both jazz and classical idioms\, Lori is devoted to chamber music: the breadth of classical repertoire for flute and piano she has recorded and performed with her stellar musical partner\, Diane Snodgrass\, especially showing that commitment. The album ‘Night Soliloquy’ features 20th century French and American repertoire. “While there are many attractive features to Bell’s performances\, the most important one is that she is a storyteller. In addition to her global renown as a performer and recording artist\, Lori is a respected force in music education. She is currently on the faculty as an Instructor of Flute and studio artist teacher at San Diego State University and over the years\, has privately taught hundreds of students of all ages in flute\, piano (her secondary instrument)\, classical technique\, jazz improvisation\, theory\, composition and arranging with a focus on artistry and imagery at her studio in San Diego. \nLori has taught master classes for the New York Flute Club\, Columbia University\, Mannes Music Conservatory NYC\, The New School NYC\, San Jose State University\, Chico State\, San Diego State University\, UCLA\, Utah State University\, The National Flute Association 1989\, 2003\, 2016\, University Wisconsin Green Bay\, San Diego Flute Guild\, in Hong Kong and Singapore.

Taylor’s mother\, Sybil Stockdale\, led the formation of the League of Families in the 1970s\, pushing the Pentagon and Department of Defense to release vital POW/MIA information to families. Col. Chris Ellinger (USMC\, Ret.) will serve as the evening’s master of ceremonies. \nA suggested donation of $20 reserves a seat\, with fewer than 80 seats available. Tickets may be purchased at the Coronado VFW Post\, 557 Orange Avenue. Dinner will feature pasta Bolognese with meatball\, or a vegetarian primavera pasta with spinach\, mushrooms\, and seasonal vegetables\, accompanied by Caesar salad\, artisan bread with butter\, and a dessert tray of brownies and lemon bites. \nGuests are asked to arrive at 5 p.m. for seating; the program begins at 5:30 p.m. Dress is casual. \nThe Coronado VFW thanks you for your support to the organization and veterans.

DESCRIPTION:Volunteers at Operation Clean Sweep coastal cleanup on Aug. 23.\, 2025\nEmerald Keepers will be joining I Love a Clean San Diego at Tidelands Park for California Coastal Cleanup Day on Sept. 20 from 9 a.m. to noon. The statewide event\, now in its 41st year\, is organized by the California Coastal Commission and is California’s largest annual volunteer event. Each September\, volunteers remove hundreds of thousands of pounds of trash from the state’s beaches\, lakes\, and waterways. \nThis year\, the California Coastal Commission will be having a “Trashure Hunt\,” which is billed as the world’s largest scavenger hunt. Special “trash” items will be hidden at cleanup sites all across the state. If you find one of them\, you can redeem it for a prize. \nMeet at Tidelands Park and look for the Emerald Keepers flag. Bring a bucket\, gloves and a picker if you have them. See you there! \n

SUMMARY:¡Guerra! The People and Places of the US-Mexico War in San Diego Lecture
DESCRIPTION:In December 1846\, the largest battle of the US-Mexico War in California occurred about 30 miles north of Old Town\, in the San Pasqual Valley near today’s San Diego Zoo Safari Park. American and Mexican forces struggled for control of Alta California and the battle paved the way to the eventual Mexican surrender near Los Angeles\, a month later. As part of the broader war from 1846 to 1848\, the action near San Diego secured control of Upper California for the United States and ensured its inclusion as part of the land ceded to the United States by Mexico in 1848 under the terms of the Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo. 175 years ago\, in 1850\, California became the 31st state. \n\nDavid Miller received his PhD from the University of California\, San Diego in 2007. His research focus is the social and cultural history of the nineteenth-century United States. \nDavid has been with USD since 2005\, offering a range of upper and lower-division courses including The Civil War and Reconstruction\, The Civil War and Reconstruction in Popular Culture\, US Immigration History\, California History\, A History of Race and San Diego\, US History to 1877\, and Race and Ethnicity in the American Experience. Miller received the 2017 Faculty Award for Exceptional Teaching\, the 2019 Center for Educational Excellence “Best Attendance” award\, and in 2020 the Center for Catholic Thought and Culture travel grant to explore the history of immigration in San Francisco and New York City from a Catholic perspective. He is the History Department’s internship program coordinator. \nDavid also serves as the co-editor of The Journal of San Diego History\, a joint venture with the San Diego History Center\, and can be found on any given day out and about exploring our city.

Today\, CYC stands as one of California’s oldest yacht clubs\, offering an ideal sailing environment with a steady ocean breeze and calm waters protected by the “Strand.” The club’s legacy is deeply rooted in its commitment to fostering a love for sailing across all ages and abilities.  \nHosting the 2025 U.S. Para Sailing Championship  \nCoronado Yacht Club is proud to host the 2025 U.S. Para Sailing Championship\, a premier adaptive sailing event that showcases the skill and determination of sailors with disabilities. This opportunity is a natural extension of CYC’s partnership with the KMAC Foundation\, an adaptive sailing program named in honor of CYC Junior Sailing alumnus Kyle McArthur. Since 2013\, KMAC has been a cornerstone of the club’s commitment to inclusivity\, offering accessible sailing experiences\, training dedicated volunteers\, and hosting adaptive regattas\, including the Hansa Championship of the Americas. Thanks to CYC member and KMAC leader\, Jamie McArthur\, the club has taken on the challenge of hosting this year’s U.S. Para Sailing Championship. This year’s event chair\, Scott Bucks\, has hope that the event  will provide their youth program with an opportunity to learn and help with such an essential discipline of the sport\, while also giving the sailors a fun experience.   \nCYC’s extensive experience with adaptive sailing events makes it an ideal venue for the U.S. Para Sailing Championship. With specialized lifting stations\, a dedicated fleet of adaptive sailing boats\, and a strong volunteer base\, the club is well-equipped to ensure that competitors have a seamless and enjoyable experience both on and off the water. The event will not only provide top-tier competition but also foster camaraderie and create lasting memories for sailors\, volunteers\, and spectators alike.  \nFirst established in 1986\, what was then called the U.S. Independence Cup became US Sailing’s national championship for disabled sailors in 1989. For many years it was organized by the Disabled Sailing Committee and was run in conjunction with the North American Challenge Cup\, which is hosted by Chicago Yacht Club. \nIn 2007\, the regatta moved under the Championships division of US Sailing and was renamed the U.S. Disabled Sailing Championship. The following year\, the championship moved from Chicago Yacht Club to begin to travel around the country. Many competitors at the U.S. Disabled Sailing Championships have gone on to represent the United States at the Paralympics Games including Nick Scandone\, gold medalist at the 2008 Paralympics The Chandler Hovey\, Jr. Trophy was donated at the 1994 Independence Cup by A.G.A. Correa and Co. to US Sailing. \n“Buzz” Hovey\, for whom it is named\, was active in 12 Metre racing in the ‘50’s and ‘60’s with the family-owned Twelve\, Easterner. Diagnosed with multiple sclerosis in 1947\, he continued\, nonetheless\, to sail and race actively\, especially in his Shields Class boat\, until 1981 when he retired from the racing circuit. \nPeter Goldman donated the Judd Goldman Trophy in honor of Justin “Judd” Goldman (1914-1989) who\, despite his own physical disability\, was an accomplished sailor and inspired the creation of the Judd Goldman Adaptive Sailing Program\, Chicago\, Illinois. In 2009\, the third trophy in honor of Gene Hinkel was donated in honor of Gene’s many contributions to disabled sailing and the US Paralympic team. \nOn December 18\, 2017\, the U.S. Sailing Board of Directors approved a name change from The U.S. Disabled Championship to the U.S. Para Sailing Championship to keep in line with the World Sailing and the International Olympic Committee format. \nInformation from US Sailing website.\n

SUMMARY:Autumn Concert Series: Vania Pimentel
DESCRIPTION:The Library’s Autumn Concert Series takes place on Fridays from September 5 to October 31. Each concert will begin at 1 p.m. in the Winn Room. Doors will open 15 minutes prior to the performance. On September 19\, we will have Vania Pimentel on the piano. \n \n\nConcert pianist Vania Pimentel\, born and raised in Brazil\, has been promoting Brazilian music in creative recital programs. She has a BA in Music and another BA in Philosophy from Brazil\, KA graduate artist diploma from Germany\, Masters in Piano Performance and Pedagogy\, and DMA from the University of Houston. Her doctoral dissertation was on Brazilian toccatas\, and her CD “Brazilian Toccatas and Toccatinas” was praised by the Brazilian Academy of Music and newspaper critics in Rio de Janeiro in the year of 2000\, five hundreds years of Brazil’s discovery by the Portuguese. Dr. Pimentel became a member of Pi Kappa Lambda National Music Honor Society\, and worked as an assistant teacher at the Moores School of Music and the Texas Music Festival. In Brazil\, she had worked for 14 years as a piano professor in Curitiba\, PR. Her first award at a piano competition was at the age of seven in Rio de Janeiro. Her top awards are from J. S. Bach International Piano Competition in Paris (1984)\, and Jaen Competition in Spain (1982). \nDr. Pimentel lived in Italy from 2005 until 2009\, and performed at the series Pianomaster in Gravedonamon Lake Como\, and chamber music at the Blaue Blumen concerts in Frankfurt. Afterwards\, she lived in San Diego until 2022. She performed recitals at Palomar College\, Fallbrook Library\, Coronado Library\, Encinitas Library\, the Athenaeum\, Carmel Valley Library\, and chamber music in Temecula: Classics at the Merc. She performs frequently in Brazil\, and has given masterclasses at many universities there. In 2020\, she performed and taught at the 37th Music Workshop of Curitiba\, in Paraná state. Last year she presented a solo recital during the Music Week of Lapinha\, PR\, and last April at the Chapel Santa Maria in Curitiba. Currently she lives in Miami.
