SUMMARY:Author Event: "All Eternity Lies Before Me" - A Military Family's Story of Enduring Love and Resilience
DESCRIPTION:Join us for a moving and heartfelt author event with Loreen Gibbons\, as she shares her deeply personal book\, All Eternity Lies Before Me. Written in the wake of her husband’s death while serving in the U.S. military\, Gibbons’ work is both a tribute and a testament—a poetic reflection on grief\, love\, healing\, and the enduring strength of the military spouse community. \nCome hear Loreen read from her work\, discuss the journey behind the book\, and share in a conversation about hope\, remembrance\, and finding meaning after loss. A Q&A and book signing will follow the talk. \n\nAbout Loreen Gibbons \nLoreen Gibbons is a former Navy wife\, remarried Navy widow\, and retired elementary school teacher. Her debut memoir began as letters to her grandson Spencer\, intended to introduce him to the grandfather he never met. It is a powerful narrative of survival\, resilience\, and the enduring strength of love. \nAbout All Eternity Lies Before Me \nAlfa Foxtrot 586\, a P-3 Orion turboprop\, was conducting a sensitive Cold War mission off the Kamchatka Peninsula on October 26\, 1978\, when a propeller malfunction turned into four engine fires and the pilot—Loreen Grigsby’s husband Jerry—was forced to ditch into remote\, mountainous seas churned by a frigid North Pacific gale. The aircraft sank within ninety seconds\, taking one of the three rafts with it—which left thirteen men to huddle together in the remaining two rafts\, the smaller of which soon began to leak. \nTold from Loreen’s perspective as a Navy wife at home as well as through the eyes of the men who survived the disaster\, All Eternity Lies Before Me weaves a gripping tale of struggle\, uncertainty\, grief\, and heroism. It shares Loreen’s terror as she receives notifications about her husband’s crew’s desperate battle against wind\, seas\, and biting cold. It details the ad hoc search and rescue mission\, a valiant effort to rescue the men before time runs out. And\, tragically\, it tells how a young Navy wife becomes a widow and single mom. \nBut Jerry’s death is not the end of Loreen’s story—and in the years following his loss\, she discovers resilience\, strength\, and a new future. As she begins her journey toward a brighter future\, she’s inspired by the camaraderie and brotherhood forged between the survivors and their rescuers—and ultimately\, the long-term lessons learned by all involved become part of the lasting legacy of this event.

SUMMARY:CIFF Student Classic Film: "Twelve O'Clock High"
DESCRIPTION:“Stop making plans. Forget about going home. Consider yourselves already dead. Once you accept that idea\, it won’t be so tough\,” thus speaks Gregory Peck as Brigadier General Frank Savage to the men of 918th Bomb Group in 12 O’Clock High\, the definitive dramatic film account of the American strategic bombing campaign in Europe during WWII. \n \nThe CIFF Student Classic Film Series continues with director Henry King’s 1949 classic\, 12 O’Clock High. Starring Best Actor Oscar nominee Gregory Peck and featuring a Best Supporting Actor Oscar winning performance by Dean Jagger\, 12 O’Clock High is significant as the first Hollywood feature after the war that took up the challenge of realistically showing the terrors of air combat. Before its release\, few Americans understood the mental and emotional toll the strategic bombing campaign levied upon the aircrew who flew the missions and the enormous psychological burdens leadership imposed upon the men guiding their heroic efforts. \nBased on the novel by co-authors Beirne Lay\, Jr.\, and Sy Bartlett\, 12 O’Clock High is the fictionalized account of their own experiences as Army Air Force officers in one of the first B-17 units sent to England to conduct an entirely new approach to air warfare. While still finishing their novel\, the authors pitched 12 O’Clock High to Hollywood movie studios. Twentieth Century Fox’s Darryl F. Zanuck bought their story in 1948 for $100\,000\, a princely sum at the time. The use of actual footage taken by Allied and Luftwaffe aerial combat cameras lends unprecedented wartime authenticity to a film seldom equaled in the history of motion pictures. The film rightly earned the praise of those whose heroic exploits it recounts. 12 O’Clock High is a must-see to understand the history of American air warfare and the extraordinary challenges of leading aviators and airmen in combat. It stands alone as the only motion picture ever used concurrently for leadership training in both military officer programs and the Harvard Business School. \nThe complete 2025 Student Classic schedule and reservations are available on the CIFF Website under the “Year-Round” dropdown tab. All Student Classic Film screenings are free.

SUMMARY:Navy SEAL Museum San Diego Update
DESCRIPTION:Experience a Sneak Peek into the Future of Naval Special Warfare History\nImagine witnessing a SEAL Delivery Vehicle (SDV) being delicately hoisted by a crane\, seemingly gliding through the air\, and being inserted into a second-story window. This captivating spectacle isn’t a movie scene; it’s a glimpse into the groundbreaking exhibits awaiting visitors at the Navy SEAL Museum San Diego (NSMSD)\, set to open its doors in this summer. \nBefore this landmark museum welcomes the world\, the Coronado Historical Association invites you to an exclusive update on its progress. On Thursday\, April 17\, 2025\, join us as Brian “Beef” Drechsler\, Captain\, USN (Retired) and Executive Director of NSMSD\, provides an in-depth “sitrep” on this extraordinary project. \nDrechsler will unveil the unique attributes of the NSMSD\, showcasing how the museum will bring the history of Naval Special Warfare to life. This includes immersive exhibits featuring educational displays\, docent-led storytelling\, and sensory interactive experiences. Visitors can also expect to experience the high-stakes world of SEAL operations through a cutting-edge virtual reality module\, from mission planning to extraction. The museum will also pay homage to the Frogmen\, from the Underwater Demolition Teams (UDTs) of World War II to the modern-day SEALs and Special Warfare Combat Crewmen (SWCCs). \nFor over 60 years\, Coronado has been the heart of SEAL training and operational readiness. The beaches and facilities of Naval Amphibious Base Coronado have forged generations of elite warriors\, and the NSMSD will honor this profound connection\, solidifying Coronado’s place in the history of Naval Special Warfare. \nHowever\, the NSMSD is more than just a historical repository. It is committed to being a vital community partner\, supporting active-duty personnel\, veterans\, and their families. The museum will also foster partnerships with local organizations\, promoting leadership\, resilience\, and teamwork. \nA key mission of the museum is to inspire future generations. It aims to instill values of perseverance\, courage\, adaptability\, and teamwork in visitors of all ages. It will be a destination where families and students can learn from the extraordinary achievements of ordinary people. \nThe lecture will be held at the Coronado Historical Association on Thursday\, April 17\, 2025\, with Brian “Beef” Drechsler\, Captain\, USN (Retired) and Executive Director of NSMSD\, as the speaker. Tickets are available for members ($15 each) and non-members ($20 each). Capacity is limited\, and reservations are required; no walk-ins will be admitted. SUMMARY:An Evening with Bernhard Schlink\, Bestselling Author of "The Reader"
DESCRIPTION:In his only San Diego appearance\, German author Bernhard Schlink will be sharing his new title\, The Granddaughter. An “unflinching look at the neo-Nazi movement and the compromises people make out of love” according to Publishers Weekly\, it’s a fascinating new novel by the man who wrote The Reader.  \nThis event is free and open to the public. Seating is first-come\, first-served\, subject to availability. Limited preferred seating is available with purchase of The Granddaughter through Adventures by the Book. Please visit adventuresbythebook.com/calendar-event/bernhard-schlink-4-22-25/ for more information. \n\nAbout The Granddaughter \nIt is only after the sudden death of his wife\, Birgit\, that Kaspar discovers the price she paid years earlier when she fled East Germany to join him: she had to abandon her baby. Shattered by grief\, yet animated by a new hope\, Kaspar closes up his bookshop in present day Berlin and sets off to find her lost child in the east. \nHis search leads him to a rural community of neo-Nazis\, intent on reclaiming and settling ancestral lands to the East. Among them\, Kaspar encounters Svenja\, a woman whose eyes\, hair\, and even voice remind him of Birgit. Beside her is a red-haired\, slouching\, fifteen-year-old girl. His granddaughter? Their worlds could not be more different— an ideological gulf of mistrust yawns between them— but he is determined to accept her as his own. \nMore than twenty-five years after The Reader\, Bernhard Schlink once again offers a masterfully gripping novel that powerfully probes the past’s role in contemporary life\, transporting us from the divided Germany of the 1960s to modern day Australia\, and asking what unites or separates us. \nTranslated from the German by Charlotte Collins \n  \nAbout Bernhard Schlink \nBernhard Schlink is the author of the internationally bestselling novel The Reader. He is a former judge and teaches public law and legal philosophy at Humboldt University of Berlin and at the Benjamin N. Cardozo School of Law in New York City.

SUMMARY:Best of the Best Book Club: "Winter in Sokcho" by Elisa Shua Dusapin
DESCRIPTION:The Coronado Public Library’s Best of the Best Book Club meets regularly on the fourth Wednesday of each month to discuss books that have won major awards. Receive reminder emails about our meeting by registering below. Registration is not required to attend. \nFor our April meeting\, we will discuss the 2021 National Book Award winner Winter in Sokcho by Elisa Shua Dusapin\, a novel that explores rifts of identity—personal\, cultural\, and national—and the fleeting kinship that is possible between solitary strangers. \nAbout Winter in Sokcho \nIt’s winter in Sokcho\, a tourist town on the border between South and North Korea. The cold slows everything down. Bodies are red and raw\, the fish turn venomous\, beyond the beach guns point out from the North’s watchtowers. A young French Korean woman works as a receptionist in a tired guesthouse. One evening\, an unexpected guest arrives: a French cartoonist determined to find inspiration in this desolate landscape. The two form an uneasy relationship. When she agrees to accompany him on trips to discover an “authentic” Korea\, they visit snowy mountaintops and dramatic waterfalls\, and cross into North Korea. But he takes no interest in the Sokcho she knows—the gaudy neon lights\, the scars of war\, the fish market where her mother works.
