SUMMARY:Wine & Lecture: The Pacific Parachute Company
DESCRIPTION:The Coronado Historical Association invites you to the September Wine & Lecture on Thursday\, September 19\, 2024\, at 5:30 p.m.   \nEighty-two years ago\, Howard “Skippy” Smith founded the nation’s first black-owned and managed defense production plant in San Diego. Author Agin Shaheed will discuss the life of this skydiver turned national-recognized entrepreneur. \nBorn in Alabama in 1913\, “Skippy” Smith moved to Los Angeles California during the Great Depression with little to nothing in his pocket with hopes of becoming a pilot. By 1939\, he had become a renowned skydiver with his partner Mac “Skip” Gravelly. The duo became well known for the difficult and dangerous free fall jumps followed by delayed parachute openings at air shows.  \nSmith would eventually move to San Diego and become the first African American hired by defense contractor Standard Parachute to test\, pack\, and inspect parachutes manufactured for WWII. Around the same time\, comedian Jack Benny’s partner\, Eddie “Rochester” Anderson\, was looking for ways he could contribute to the war effort and was introduced to Smith. With Anderson’s financial backing\, Smith’s Pacific Parachute Company opened on 8th Street in San Diego in March 1942. Pacific Parachute earned recognition from Time Magazine as the “Top Black Owned Business in the United States” in 1943. Smith also notably employed one of the few integrated workforces in San Diego at that time.   \nAgin Shaheed\, a native Californian\, served in the US Navy from 1968-1972. He has authored two books in his “unsung hero” series. First\, Charles C. Flint\, The Man\, and His Times\, chronicles the life of one of Los Angeles’ most remarkable Black citizens. He also recently released the book\, A Musical Blueprint\, Ernie Freeman\, The Man\, and His Times which recounts the life of the Grammy-winning arranger\, composer\, conductor\, producer\, director\, bandleader\, orchestra leader\, and voice coach. Agin has also co-authored Our Roots Run Deep\, The Black Experience in California 1900-1970 and It’s Your Choice\, San Diego Unified Schools manual for African American Males. \nReserve your spot to hear the fascinating story of this African American entrepreneur who made history in San Diego. Learn more about this event and others online at coronadohistory.org or call 619-435-7242.

SUMMARY:Autumn Concert Series: Joshua White Trio
DESCRIPTION:The Library’s Autumn Concert Series takes place on Fridays from September 6 to October 25. Each concert will begin at 1 p.m. in the Winn Room. Doors will open 15 minutes prior to the performance. On September 20\, the Joshua White Trio will be performing The Music of Johnny Mercer. \n\nJoshua White is one of the music scene’s most creative and technically accomplished pianists. Praised by legendary musicians like Herbie Hancock as having “immense talent” and lauded for his “daring and courageous approach to improvisation … on the cutting edge of innovation”\, Joshua has distinguished himself as a formidable leader of distinct voice among his peers.  Born and raised in Southern California\, Joshua received early training at the piano and developed rapidly through rigorous study of both Western European Classical literature and the Black American Music traditions. Shortly after placing in the top two as a finalist of the prestigious Thelonious Monk International Piano Competition\, Joshua began concertizing as a soloist and musical collaborator all over the world — and continues to maintain an active touring schedule throughout Europe\, Africa\, and Asia.  Joshua White can most often be heard with his critically-acclaimed TRIO (featuring Karl McComas-Reichl\, bass & Tyler Kreutel\, drums)\, as well as these musical ensembles: The Mark Dresser Quintet\, Nicole Mitchell’s Black Earth Ensemble\, The Daniel Rosenboom Quartet\, Steph Richards & Super Sense\, and LANCASTER (featuring Eric Revis\, bass; Jeff Parker\, guitar; & Guillermo Brown\, drums). \nJazz bassist Rob Thorsen maintains a diverse and busy schedule in Southern California as a performer\, educator\, clinician and composer. He has found his true voice in the upright bass and performs regularly as a leader with artists including the Mike Wofford/Holly Hofmann Quartet\, Gilbert Castellanos\, Charles McPherson\, Steph Johnson and a host of others.  Rob has released six recordings as a leader\,  “Bass is the Space – Solos and Duos” featuring an array of jazz talents including Joshua White\, Steph Johnson\, Gilbert Castellanos and Marshall Hawkins in duo and solo performances. His most recent release is “So In Love” — a 10-track album with his wife/lead vocalist Steph Johnson featuring songs from Cole Porter\, Joni Mitchell\, and others. \nTyler Kreutel is a drummer/percussionist based in the Southern California area. Born and raised in San Diego\, California\, he took up the drums at the age of 12 in his middle school jazz band and hasn’t looked back since. Tyler graduated from The San Diego School for Creative and Performing Arts in 2012 and went on to receive his Bachelors in Music Performance at California State University Long Beach. While in college Tyler began playing professionally in both the San Diego and Los Angeles area and has been doing so ever since. Tyler has had the great fortune of playing with many outstanding musicians including Gilbert Castellanos\, Charles McPherson\, Henry Franklin\, Joshua White\, Marshall Hawkins\, Steve Cotter and is one of the most in demand drummers in Southern California. He has taught at both The Orange County School of the Arts and Downey High School and is currently teaching at YLJC.

SUMMARY:Spoilers Book Club: "Postcards From The Edge" by Carrie Fisher
DESCRIPTION:The Spoilers Book Club reads books that have been turned into movies. We read the book and get together to watch the film. We compare the two and discuss what we did and didn’t like. \n \n“Postcards From The Edge” by Carrie Fisher\n\nWhen we first meet the extraordinary young actress Suzanne Vale\, she’s feeling like “something on the bottom of someone’s shoe\, and not even someone interesting.” Suzanne is in the harrowing and hilarious throes of drug rehabilitation\, trying to understand what happened to her life and how she managed to land in a “drug hospital.” \nJust as Fisher’s first film role—the precocious teenager in Shampoo—echoed her own Beverly Hills upbringing\, her first book is set within the world she knows better than anyone else: Hollywood. This stunning literary debut chronicles Suzanne’s vivid\, excruciatingly funny experiences inside the clinic and as she comes to terms with life in the outside world. “Postcards from the Edge” is more than a book about stardom and drugs. It is a revealing look at the dangers—and delights—of all our addictions\, from money and success to sex and insecurity. \nFilm\n“Postcards from the Edge” (1990)\nRated R\nRuntime: 1h 41m

SUMMARY:Best of the Best Book Club: "Firekeeper's Daughter" by Angeline Boulley
DESCRIPTION:The Coronado Public Library’s Best of the Best Book Club meets regularly on the fourth Wednesday of each month to discuss books that have won major awards. Receive reminder emails about our meeting by registering. Registration is not required. \n \nFor our September meeting\, we will discuss the 2022 Printz Medal winner Firekeeper’s Daughter by Angeline Boulley\, a groundbreaking young adult thriller about a Native teen who must root out the corruption in her community. \nAbout Firekeeper’s Daughter:  \nEighteen-year-old Daunis Fontaine has never quite fit in\, both in her hometown and on the nearby Ojibwe reservation. She dreams of a fresh start at college\, but when family tragedy strikes\, Daunis puts her future on hold to look after her fragile mother. The only bright spot is meeting Jamie\, the charming new recruit on her brother Levi’s hockey team. \nYet even as Daunis falls for Jamie\, she senses the dashing hockey star is hiding something. Everything comes to light when Daunis witnesses a shocking murder\, thrusting her into an FBI investigation of a lethal new drug. \nReluctantly\, Daunis agrees to go undercover\, drawing on her knowledge of chemistry and Ojibwe traditional medicine to track down the source. But the search for truth is more complicated than Daunis imagined\, exposing secrets and old scars. At the same time\, she grows concerned with an investigation that seems more focused on punishing the offenders than protecting the victims. \nNow\, as the deceptions—and deaths—keep growing\, Daunis must learn what it means to be a strong Anishinaabe kwe (Ojibwe woman) and how far she’ll go for her community\, even if it tears apart the only world she’s ever known.

SUMMARY:Spielberg’s 1998 Masterpiece\, "Saving Private Ryan"
DESCRIPTION:Nominated for eleven\, and winner of five\, Academy Awards\, “Saving Private Ryan” is considered by many to be the greatest war movie ever made. Presented by Coronado Island Film Festival as part of the popular monthly Classic Film Series\, it will screen at Coronado’s Village Theatre\, 820 Orange Ave.\, on Wednesday\, September 25. \nDoors will open at 5 pm for a Meet and Greet with complimentary wine\, followed by the feature presentation at 5:30. Tickets are $15 and are available at coronadofilmfest.com. \nDirector Steven Spielberg won the Oscar for his work\, as did cinematographer Janusz Kaminski. The opening 24-minute battle scene on Omaha Beach cost $12 million to film over a four-week period\, using 1500 background actors\, and is thought to be one of the greatest pieces of combat cinema ever made. \nThe film is set in Normandy\, France\, and stars Tom Hanks as Capt. John Miller\, who has been ordered to locate a young private from Iowa named James Francis Ryan (Matt Damon) behind enemy lines\, to send him safely home to his grieving mother after his three brothers have all been killed in action. \nThe cast includes Edward Burns as rebellious soldier Richard Reiben\, Tom Sizemore as Mike Horvath\, Miller’s great friend and second-in-command\, and Jeremy Davies as Timothy Upham\, the French and German interpreter. \nAlso watch for the familiar faces of Ted Danson\, Paul Giamatti\, and Bryan Cranston. The music by John Williams is just perfect. \nAs one reviewer put it in 1998\, “It gives us a million reasons why no one should go to war and one very powerful reason to go to war. It’s a soul-numbing\, realistic depiction of what our grandfathers\, fathers\, uncles\, brothers and sons have faced in humanity’s darkest moments. Not just in WWII\, but in any war. No one can see this movie without being altered in some way.” \nTickets are available at coronadofilmfest.com. And – while you’re at it – now is the time to get your badges for CIFF 2024\, Wed. Nov. 6 – Sun. Nov. 10. \nOn October 30\, be sure to join us at our next classic film offering for another of Mel Brooks’ adventures into pure wackiness\, “Bride of Frankenstein\,” as we celebrate Halloween together.
