SUMMARY:Crown City Classic
DESCRIPTION:The Crown City Classic is back for its 51st year on July 4\, 2024\, celebrating over five decades of running and community spirit in the beautiful city of Coronado. The event\, which has become one of the country’s premier 4th of July running celebrations\, invites participants of all ages and abilities to take part in a variety of races\, including a 12K\, a 5K\, and a Kids Half Mile. With its scenic routes and vibrant patriotic spirit\, this annual event has become a much-anticipated tradition. Register here. \nPhoto: RWBMultimedia\nThe day’s festivities start at 7 am with the 12K and 5K races\, beginning under the largest American flag on the West Coast. From there\, runners embark on a stunning journey along Glorietta Boulevard\, which offers panoramic views of downtown San Diego and the iconic Coronado Bay Bridge. The races start and finish at Tidelands Park\, providing a beautiful backdrop for runners and spectators alike. After the main races\, the Kids Half Mile begins at 8:30 am\, offering a delightful loop around Tidelands Park for the youngest participants. \nPhoto: RWBMultimedia\nRace director Jamie Monroe captures the energy of the event\, describing it as\, “An experience where you’re running down a street filled with cheering crowds and a sense of patriotism—that’s what the Crown City Classic is all about.” The race has attracted participants from nearly 45 states and various countries\, becoming a key event on the 4th of July calendar. But it’s more than just a race. The Crown City Classic also features other celebrations throughout the day\, including a parade at 10 am and two grand fireworks shows over Glorietta and San Diego Bays\, providing a spectacular end to the festivities. \nPhoto: RWBMultimedia\nThis year\, there’s a new twist to the event with the introduction of Team Stars and Team Stripes. Participants can pre-purchase exclusive jerseys to represent their chosen team\, adding a friendly competitive edge to the event. As an added incentive\, there’s a $100 cash reward for the top male and female finishers in both the 12K and 5K races—provided they’re wearing their team jerseys. Joining a team is optional\, but this new feature brings an extra level of excitement and camaraderie to the event. \nPhoto: RWBMultimedia\nAll participants will receive an official 2024 patriotic race tee\, a finisher’s medal\, and official chip-timed results. The event also awards medals to the top three male and female finishers in both the 12K and 5K races\, as well as age group medals for the top three runners in each category. Beyond the race\, the Crown City Classic supports the Islander Sports Foundation\, a non-profit organization dedicated to funding and supporting all Coronado school sports programs. \n\n\n\nAs the 51st annual Crown City Classic approaches\, the excitement is palpable in Coronado. This event is more than just a race—it’s a celebration of athleticism\, patriotism\, and community. SUMMARY:An Evening with Author Kate Quinn
DESCRIPTION:On Tuesday\, July 9\, celebrate the launch of Kate Quinn’s latest book\, The Briar Club. Quinn will be in conversation with author Jennifer Coburn (Cradles of the Reich) at 7 pm at the Coronado Public Library. \nThis event is free and open to the public. Seating is first-come\, first-served\, subject to availability. Limited preferred seating is available with purchase of The Briar Club through Adventure’s by the Book. Please visit adventuresbythebook.com/calendar-event/kate-quinn/ for more information. \n\nKate Quinn is the New York Times and USA Today bestselling author of historical fiction. A native of southern California\, she attended Boston University where she earned a Bachelor’s and Master’s degree in Classical Voice. She has written four novels in the Empress of Rome Saga\, and two books in the Italian Renaissance\, before turning to the 20th century with The Alice Network\, The Huntress\, The Rose Code\, and The Diamond Eye. All have been translated into multiple languages. \n\nAbout The Briar Club\n\nThe Briar Club is a haunting and powerful story of female friendships and secrets in a Washington\, DC\, boardinghouse during the McCarthy era. \nWashington\, DC\, 1950. Everyone keeps to themselves at Briarwood House\, a down-at-the-heels all-female boardinghouse in the heart of the nation’s capital where secrets hide behind white picket fences. But when the lovely\, mysterious widow Grace March moves into the attic room\, she draws her oddball collection of neighbors into unlikely friendship: poised English beauty Fliss\, whose facade of perfect wife and mother covers gaping inner wounds; policeman’s daughter Nora\, who finds herself entangled with a shadowy gangster; frustrated baseball star Beatrice\, whose career has come to an end along with the women’s baseball league of WWII; and poisonous\, gung-ho Arlene\, who has thrown herself into McCarthy’s Red Scare. \nGrace’s weekly attic-room dinner parties and window-brewed sun tea become a healing balm on all their lives\, but she hides a terrible secret of her own. When a shocking act of violence tears the house apart\, the Briar Club women must decide once and for all: who is the true enemy in their midst? \nCapturing the paranoia of the McCarthy era and evoking the changing roles for women in postwar America\, The Briar Club is an intimate and thrilling novel of secrets and loyalty put to the test. \nJennifer Coburn is the author of Cradles of the Reich\, a historical novel about three very different women living at a Nazi Lebensborn breeding home at the start of World War ll. She has also published a mother-daughter travel memoir\, We’ll Always Have Paris\, as well as six contemporary women’s novels. Additionally\, Coburn has contributed to five literary anthologies\, including A Paris All Your Own.

DESCRIPTION:The Coronado Island Film Festival (CIFF) is thrilled to present “Gidget Comes to Coronado\,” a special weekend featuring two events with Kathy Kohner-Zuckerman\, the iconic surfer girl and real-life inspiration for the Gidget novel\, TV shows\, and film. \n \nThe celebration continues on Saturday\, July 13\, with a screening of the 2010 documentary\, Accidental Icon: The Real Gidget Story at Coronado’s Village Theatre. Filmmaker Brian Gillogly\, Kohner-Zuckerman\, and surf legend Jericho Poppler will participate in a post-screening Q&A. Limited VIP tickets include a copy of the bestselling book Gidget\, written by Kohner-Zuckerman’s father Frederick Kohner and inspired by Kathy’s teenage summer in Malibu\, along with a book signing. The doors open at 10:30 am and the film begins at 11 am. \n“Growing up in Southern California\, Gidget was a part of our pop culture\,” states Merridee Book\, CIFF CEO & Artistic Director\, “Hosting the ‘real’ Gidget is such an honor! These events represent a quintessential blend of the California surf culture of the ’50s and ’60s\, breaking the barrier of a male-dominated sport\, inspiring a new generation of female surfers\, and celebrating an era gone by.” \nProceeds from these events and the raffle will benefit the Coronado Island Film Festival\, a 501(c)(3) organization. Raffle items include a Surf Bike from Shaka Surf Bikes. Those who cannot attend can support CIFF by donating online; through July 11\, every $25.00 donation will receive one raffle entry.

SUMMARY:T. Jefferson Parker: In-Person Luncheon with the Author
DESCRIPTION:The Friends of the Coronado Public Library will host T. Jefferson Parker for an intimate luncheon with the author as well as a signing of his new book\, Desperation Reef\, on July 17 at 11:30 am in the Winn Room at the Coronado Public Library. \nThe $40 ticket includes lunch and a hardcover copy of the book. Proceeds support free programs at the library such as lectures\, workshops\, classes\, concerts and children’s programs. The talk will be followed by a Q&A session and a chance to have the author sign books. This event is in partnership with Warwick’s Bookstore. To purchase tickets and reserve your seats\, please register at cplevents.org. Don’t delay – seating is limited! \nT. Jefferson Parker was born in Los Angeles and has lived all his life in Southern California. He was educated in public schools in Orange County\, and earned a bachelor’s degree in English from the University of California\, Irvine\, in 1976. His writing career began in 1978\, with a job as a cub reporter on the weekly newspaper\, The Newport Ensign. After covering police\, city hall and cultural stories for the Ensign\, Parker moved on to the Daily Pilot newspaper\, where he won three Orange County Press Club awards for his articles. Parker’s first novel\, Laguna Heat\, was written on evenings and weekends while he worked as a reporter\, and was published to rave reviews and made into an HBO movie starring Harry Hamlin\, Jason Robards and Rip Torn. He has written over 28 novels. When not working\, Parker spends his time with his family\, hiking\, fishing\, beachcombing\, and exercising his dogs. He cannot pass by a body of water without wanting to fish it. He also enjoys rock hounding\, cycling and being outdoors. \n\n\n\nAbout Desperation Reef:  \nJen Stonebreaker hasn’t entered into a big-wave surfing competition since witnessing her husband’s tragic death twenty-five years ago at the Monsters of the Mavericks. Now\, Jen is ready to tackle those same Monsters with her twin sons Casey and Brock\, who have become competitive surfers in a perilous sport. \n\n\n\nWhen he’s not riding waves\, modeling for surfing magazines\, or posting viral content for his many fans\, Casey Stonebreaker spends his days helping with the family restaurant — catching fish in the morning and bartending at night. Casey’s love for the ocean and his willingness to expose illegal poachers on his platforms puts him on a collision course with a crime syndicate eager to destroy anyone threatening their business. \nOutspoken Brock Stonebreaker couldn’t be more different from his twin. The founder of Breath of Life\, a church and rescue mission that assists with natural disasters that no one else will touch\, Brock has lived an adventurous and sometimes violent life. Not everyone appreciates the work that Brock’s Breath of Life mission accomplishes\, and threats to destroy his mission—and his family—swirl around him. \nAs the big-wave contest draws closer\, a huge\, late fall swell is headed toward the Pacific coastline. Jen’s fears gnaw at her — fear for herself\, for her sons\, for what this competition will mean for the rest of her life.
