SUMMARY:"The Knot" Dedication
DESCRIPTION:A ceremony is set for 4 pm on Wednesday\, Oct. 19\, to dedicate a sculpture — “The Knot” — recently installed at Promenade Park overlooking Glorietta Bay between City Hall and the Community Center. The community is invited to join the family of the artist and other arts enthusiasts for this free event. Light refreshments will be served after the program. \nA plaque commemorating the piece will be unveiled at the site. The City Council accepted the gift\, which was donated by The Wood Family Trust\, in late 2021 based on a recommendation by the Cultural Arts Commission. The Knot was designed and built by the late artist Jim Wood\, a former Coronado resident and lieutenant commander in the Navy’s Civil Engineer Corps. \nThe location was selected because Wood was stationed at nearby Naval Amphibious Base Coronado\, where he realized his passion for welding pieces of steel and bronze. The Promenade Park location also is a popular site for couples who tie the knot in the nearby grassy area. The City hopes the sculpture becomes a symbolic backdrop for wedding photos. \n“The Knot” is the newest addition to the more than 75 public art pieces in the City’s collection placed throughout Coronado. For more information\, download the Coronado Public Art App on your smartphone or visit CoronadoARTS.com. \nRELATED: \nArt as Infinity (video)

SUMMARY:FILM FORUM CORONADO: "Loves of a Blonde"
DESCRIPTION:Coronado Public Library\, in partnership with the Coronado Island Film Festival\, presents FILM FORUM CORONADO\, taking place the first and third Wednesday of each month at 6pm in the library’s Winn Room. Film expert Ralph DeLauro provides a brief introduction to each film and leads a discussion afterwards\, often including pointers about how lighting or camera angles contribute to a scene’s mood or propel the story. \nOctober 19: Loves of a Blonde (1966\, 90 min\, Czech with English subtitles) \nA beguiling blend of humor and heartbreak\, this fresh and funny satire of generational restlessness from Milos Forman was a high point of the Czech New Wave. A naïve girl from a provincial industrial town is seduced by a rakish piano player and journeys from the first pangs of love to eventual disappointment.

SUMMARY:The Forgotten Search for a North Island Plane
DESCRIPTION:Local award-winning historian and preservationist Alexander D. Bevil will use historic photographs and maps to reveal a forgotten chapter in North Island’s early military history: the search for missing pilot 1st Lieutenant Charles L. Webber\, and his passenger\, Assistant Chief of Cavalry Lt. Colonel Frances C. Marshall. The search\, which lasted from December 7\, 1922 to February 1923\, was the largest and longest combined air and ground search in American military history during peacetime. The presentation will also focus on the leadership role Rockwell Field’s pilots and observers played flying outdated aircraft over forbidding mountain and desert terrain from San Diego to Tucson. It will also discuss the role these men played in recovering Webber and Marshall’s remains\, and the erection of the first of two monuments in their memory at the crash site. Two of these\, base commander Major Henry “Hap” Arnold\, and Texas-based pilot Major Theodore C. Macaulay\, would later play key command roles during World War II. After the war\, Major Macaulay would serve as an active and well-respected member of the Coronado Civic Club and a local bank branch manager. \nA graduate of San Diego State University with a Bachelor’s degree in History\, Alexander D. Bevil is an award-winning local historian. Before\, during\, and after his 20-year tenure as a California State Parks historian\, he worked diligently trying to save historic resources both in and outside the California State Parks system. Based in San Diego\, he has evaluated numerous historic resources in California State Parks throughout southern and central California ranging from stone-built mountain cabins to “lost” towns. His favorite projects\, however\, involved investigating historic military resources\, especially “lost” aircraft crash sites.

SUMMARY:Walking Tour of Historic Coronado
DESCRIPTION:One of the best ways to experience the history of Coronado is to go on a historic walking tour. This is the secret that Coronado locals know: it takes time to sense the past. When you slow down\, you have a chance to see\, hear\, and remember this place that Hollywood stars\, princes\, and presidents have enjoyed. Everywhere you look in this charming beach town\, you find history. And\, that history is easiest to see on foot – when you have a chance to linger in front of a tiny\, shingled house\, perhaps\, and meet the resident as he comes out into the yard to water his roses and tells you about the multiple generations who have lived in the home. Or\, when you seemingly stumble upon the magical house from which the Wizard of Oz was born. \nWe’re proud to host you on Coronado’s premier walking tour. Every tour purchase supports the Coronado Historical Association and its mission. Thank you for your support. \nEvery Sunday at 11 am & Thursday at 1 pm\nLocation: Coronado Historical Association\,\n1100 Orange Ave\, Coronado\, CA 92118\nAdmission: Adults $20 | Children (12 & under) $5\nBUY TICKETS HERE\nTours are approximately 90 minutes and two miles at a comfortable pace. They are appropriate for young and old alike. Only certified service animals are allowed. This is an outdoor tour. Masks are optional for fully vaccinated persons with the booster shot\, and required for those who are not. \nOnline tour sales close at 10 am the day of the tour and are nonrefundable.
