DESCRIPTION:The Coronado Historical Association invites you to join us for the following lecture in the Wine & Lecture series\, The Service Knows and Will Remember: The Airplane Crash Site Memorial on Japacha Ridge. Local award-winning historian and preservationist Alexander D. Bevil will use historic photographs and maps to reveal a forgotten chapter in North Island’s early military history: the search for missing pilot 1st Lieutenant Charles L. Webber\, and his passenger\, Assistant Chief of Cavalry Lt. Colonel Frances C. Marshall. The search lasted from December 7\, 1922\, to February 1923 and was the most extensive and longest combined air and ground search in American military history during peacetime. \nThe presentation will also focus on the leadership role Rockwell Field’s pilots and observers played in flying outdated aircraft over forbidding mountain and desert terrain from San Diego to Tucson\, Arizona. It will also discuss the role these men played in recovering Webber and Marshall’s remains and the erection of the first of two monuments in their memory at the crash site. Two of these pilots\, base commander Major Henry “Hap” Arnold\, and Texas-based pilot Major Theodore C. Macaulay would later play key command roles during World War II. After the war\, Major Macaulay would serve as an active and well-respected member of the Coronado Civic Club and a local branch bank manager. \nReception at 5:30 pm\, followed by 6:00 pm lecture. Based in San Diego\, he has evaluated numerous historic resources in California State Parks throughout southern and central California. Ranging from stone-built mountain cabins to “lost” towns\, his favorite projects\, however\, involved investigating historic military resources: especially “lost” aircraft crash sites. In addition to explaining the memorial’s historical significance\, Mr. Bevil seeks to use his presentation to garner support for his upcoming nomination of the crash site and its memorial to the National Register of Historic Places in time for the former’s 100th anniversary this December 7th. \n  \n

It will also allow the Emergency Department to expand from eight beds to fifteen. \nCheck-in is at 11:30 am as well as bag drop assistance\, complimentary driving range\, putting contest for VIPS\, lunch\, and beverages. Tournament shotgun start is at 1 pm. The format is a four person scramble. Social hour is at 5:30 pm with appetizers\, beverages\, dessert\, prize drawings\, and tournament awards distribution.

For this week’s performance\, violinist Regina Tolley will be playing romantic and popular songs from the 1920s to today. \n\nRegina Tolley is an accomplished acoustic and electric violinist based out of San Diego. \nShe first fell in love with the violin at age nine\, when she saw the local middle school orchestra perform. After years of orchestral and ensemble experiences throughout middle school and high school\, she decided to pursue her passion for music at Point Loma Nazarene University\, where she graduated Cum Laude with a B.A. in Music and a minor in Pre-Therapeutic Psychology. \nTolley has been a session and performing musician for over 15 year with artists like Rihanna and Louis XIV\, and has toured with bands locally\, throughout the United States\, and in Canada and Europe. \nWhen she’s not performing for weddings and other events\, you can find her teaching private and group lessons in her music studio\, tracking live strings for bands/artists or feature films\, and creating her own original songs.

In 2014 the Association of Community College Trustees recognized him as one of the 5 top community college professors in the country.   He is a frequent non-partisan commentator on politics\, giving almost two thousand  interviews to local\, national and international media including public radio and TV\, CBS\, NBC\, the Associated Press  and the BBC.  Dr. Luna has provided extensive analysis of local and national politics for over 20 years for San Diego KPBS Radio & Television and has been San Diego Fox5’s political analyst for over a decade.  He has written and blogged extensively for the San Diego Union Tribune and San Diego City Beat Magazine and is a contributing author to the anthology of presidential biographies\, Public Pillars\, Private Lives and a revised volume on the presidency:  Imperial Presidents: The Rise of Executive Power from Roosevelt to Obama.   Dr. Luna is co-chair of Restoring Respect\, a community initiative promoting greater civility in San Diego dialogue supported by a consortium of academic institutions and community groups. In this capacity Dr. Luna organized and conducted ten Restoring Respect conferences attended by hundreds of San Diego community members\, students and local educational and civic leaders to participate in panels and discussions including  nationally recognized speakers In 2014 he became the first director of the Institute for Civil Civic Engagement\, formed between USD and the San Diego Community College District’s City\, Continuing Education\, Mesa and Miramar Colleges. Over the past 30 years Dr. Luna has given dozens of community presentations on political topics ranging from citizen-initiative zoning to threats facing American democracy  to a wide variety of community groups and facilitated numerous community discussions and public debates across San Diego.  In 1999-2000 Dr. Luna  served as a senior Fulbright Scholar lecturing on international relations and economics at Nizhny Novgorod State University in the Russian Federation. Dr. Luna had a front row seat to the rise of Putin and the fall of Russian democracy\, which has informed his academic and civic pursuits ever since.
