SUMMARY:Exploring the American Southwest: The Story of Cabeza de Vaca and Estebanico
DESCRIPTION:Little is known about the failed Panfilo de Narvaez expedition of 1527. This failed exploration is the story of European survivors Alvar Nunez Cabeza de Vaca and a slave\, Esteban\, nee Mustafa al-Zamori\, from Azemmour\, Morocco. This presentation is based on La Relacion\, which chronicles a story of survival\, by Cabeza de Vaca. Here he relates their arduous journey of eight years traversing territories from Florida to Texas and how they endured as slaves and healers among various native groups. Ultimately\, in 1536 they are rescued by Spanish soldiers. This story concludes with Esteban’s journey north with Fray Marcos de Niza expedition in 1539 to find the Seven Cities of Cibola and his final encounter with the Zuni. \n

Ford will be discussing his new book\, The “Many Daughters of Afong Moy\,” which will only have been released on July 27\, 2022\, just days before his Coronado appearance. \nThe $40 ticket includes lunch and a hardcover copy of the book. Proceeds support free programs at the library such as lectures\, workshops\, classes\, concerts and children’s programs. The talk will be followed by a Q&A session and a chance to have the author sign books. This event is in partnership with Warwick’s Bookstore. Half-price tickets are available for youth (ages 5 to 17)\, young adults (18 to 34) and active duty military. \nShowings are Wednesday\, Thursday and Friday at 7pm; Saturday at 4pm and 8pm; Sunday at 2pm. \nLamb’s Players Theatre operates under the Health Protocol set by Actors Equity\, the union of theatre performers. To help ensure safety and well-being in the current pandemic environment\, all our theatre staff\, cast and crew members are fully vaccinated. All our Usher Teams are required to be fully vaccinated as well.
