SUMMARY:CIFF Student Classic Film: “The Great Escape" (1963)
DESCRIPTION:On Sunday April 27 at 1 pm\, the 2025 “War That Shaped Our World” CIFF Student Classic Film Series continues with director John Sturges’ 1963 classic\, The Great Escape. Featuring an all-star ensemble cast and a memorably iconic score by Elmer Bernstein\, The Great Escape is notable as actor Steve McQueen’s breakout lead role as “cooler king\,” Captain Virgil Hilts. It is no coincidence that McQueen later went on to become known by movie insiders as “the King of Cool.” \n \nDirector John Sturges’ war thriller is today recognized as a masterpiece of the POW and action genres. It is based on a 1950 book of the same name by Australian Paul Brickhill\, who was part of the March 1944 mass escape from the Nazi POW compound\, Stalag Luft III. While the film has its critics as a clichéd chronicle of the escape\, it stands as a testament to the daring and ingenuity of British and Allied aviators and aircrew who labored for almost a year to devise and execute an audacious plan to flee captivity and tie up Nazi troops trying to track them down. It stands today as a memorial to the 50 POWs executed in the aftermath of the breakout. As Charles Clarke\, an RAF Officer shot down and interned at Stalag Luft III succinctly put it\, “Without the film\, who would remember what a magnificent achievement it was?” \nThe opening of the film informs the audience\, “This is a true story. Although the characters are composites of real men\, and time and place have been compressed\, every detail of the escape is the way it really happened.” Movie lovers won’t want to miss this opportunity to screen this most enduring of WWII themed action classics. \nThe screening is FREE and open to the public. \nThe complete 2025 Student Classic schedule and reservations are available on the CIFF website under the “Year-Round” dropdown tab. \n

DESCRIPTION:The Coronado School of the Arts (CoSA) Visual Arts conservatory is set to enchant guests with the exhibit “Centered” at C3 Gallery at 1845 Strand Way on Tuesday\, April 29 from 5:30 to 7pm. More than 125 pieces from all students will be on display\, including 3D art. The exhibit also features a 2025 Senior Showcase called “Flashback.” \n“The seniors like the ‘Flashback’ theme because they can look through the work they have produced over the last four years and choose works they prefer\,” said Karrie Jackson\, Visual Arts Conservatory Chair. “Their work has really evolved to showcase more advanced technical skill and portraits.” \nThe opening reception will be held in the Nautilus Room\, and the event is free and open to the public. Refreshments will be provided. \nFor graduating seniors like Ben Byars\, the exhibit is a chance to showcase art that has grown and developed over the years. \n“Of all the subjects I’ve painted and drawn\, portraits have been my favorite\,” said Byars. “This year has led to some of my favorite stylistic and compositional experimentation with portraiture\, and I hope to continue with it going forward.” \nAs conservatory chair\, Jackson is excited that CoSA Visual Arts has expanded this year to accommodate growing interest after running a waitlist for more than ten years. \n“I’m so grateful we can make room for more enthusiastic and skilled student artists\,” said Jackson. “I personally believe creativity should be cultivated and not competitive\, so I am happy more students have the space and the community to cultivate their interest.”

DESCRIPTION:The annual San Diego-Baku Youth Chess Tournament will be held 9:30 am-2:30 pm\, May 3 at the Coronado Public Library. \nA series of exhibition matches between an international chess grandmaster and three selected American youth players in the Winn Room of the library will be a feature of the tourney. A special guest will be Grandmaster Vasif Durarbayli\, an Azerbaijani based in St. Louis. His appearance will include a chess clinic open to all who attend. \nDurarbayli\, who started playing chess at the age of six\, became an international master at the age of 15 in 2007\, and three years later became a grandmaster. He is a native of Azerbaijan\, which he represented in several Chess Olympiads. The grandmaster designation is the highest designation in chess. Chess titles are awarded by the International Chess Federation. There are 1\,850 grandmasters worldwide. \nThere is no charge to participate in the event\, open to players age eight to 18. A catered lunch from Panera Bread will be provided to registered players. DESCRIPTION:“The Search” – A Mother’s Day Story of the Indomitable Love of a Mother Determined to Find Her Lost Son \n \nSunday\, May 11 at 1 PM\, the 2025 “War That Shaped Our World” CIFF Student Classic Film Series continues with director Fred Zinneman’s “The Search\,” the story of “The Lost Children of Europe.” “The Search” features the Oscar nominated first feature film appearance of Montgomery Clift and a Special Juvenile Academy Award winning performance by nine-year old Ivan Jandl. The Search is also noteworthy as American immigrant\, Austrian-born Jewish director Fred Zinnemann’s first box office success and as perhaps the first Hollywood feature film dramatizing the consequences of The Holocaust. \nFollowing the War\, orphaned children are moved to a United Nations Relief and Rehabilitation camp in Germany. During an interview to determine his identity a young boy named Karel\, separated from his mother at Auschwitz\, is only able to say in broken German: “I don’t know.” While being transported to a second camp\, some children panic. Karel and another boy escape by jumping in a river. As Karel’s companion drowns\, Karel reaches the riverbank\, but when only a hat is recovered UN officials presume he has drowned. Simultaneously\, the audience learns his mother\, Hanna\, has survived the death camps and is searching for her son. While hiding in the city’s ruins Karel encounters an American soldier\, “Steve” Stevenson (Montgomery Clift) who becomes determined to help the boy. Convinced his relatives are dead\, Stevenson works on a plan to take Karel to the U.S. when his tour of duty ends in hopes of adopting him. The dramatic narrative intensifies as circumstances conspire with a mother’s indomitable love to resolve the drama: Will these two Holocaust survivors be reunited as mother and son? \n \nDirector Fred Zinnemann lost both parents to the Holocaust. In this documentary-style post-war feature\, he creates a realistic cinematic account to dramatize the real-world plight of hundreds of thousands of orphaned children struggling to survive and the compassionate people working to help redeem their post-war lives. Food will be served from 4 to 6pm.\n🛍️ Dig Pink Goodie Bags: Send a sweet surprise to a CHS player\, sibling\, or friend\, delivered during school on 10/7 — each order raises funds and spreads awareness.\n👚 Limited Edition Dig Pink Shirts: Available while supplies last\, with proceeds donated to the Side-Out Foundation.\n🧁 Pink Bake Sale: Players and families will host a bake sale featuring pink-themed treats\, with all proceeds going to charity.\n💖 Direct Donations: Supporters can donate directly through the team’s official Side-Out campaign page\, with many companies offering donation-matching programs that can double contributions.\n🏐 Attend the Match: All admission donations will go toward the team’s fundraising total. SUMMARY:CoSA Instrumental Music fall recital
DESCRIPTION:Students in the Coronado School of the Arts Instrumental Music Conservatory will perform their fall recital on Tuesday\, October 7 at 6 pm in the Black Box Theatre at Coronado High School. The recital will feature a string quintet\, jazz ensemble\, woodwind trio\, saxophone trio\, and an all-new brass quintet. Several solo pianists will also be featured. \nThe instrumental music coursework emphasizes the study of classical and jazz music\, and students receive intensive training in their chosen instruments in wind\, percussion\, brass\, jazz and string. Students also study music theory\, ear training\, jazz theory and improvisation\, electronic music skills\, composition and orchestration. CoSA Instrumental Music students are passionate about their craft\, and many go on to study music in college\, or continue to perform as adults. \nTickets to the fall recital are available on cosafoundation.org. Tickets prices range from $5 to $15. The Black Box Theatre is an intimate setting that allows guests to see and hear musicians up close and personal.

DESCRIPTION:COSA Visual Arts. Courtesy CUSD\nCome experience “All at Once\,” an exhibition of original artworks\, live model figure drawings and a student designed fashion show. The opening reception for the exhibit is free and open to the public on Thursday\, Dec. 11 starting at 5:30 pm and closing at 7 pm in the Black Box Gallery on the Coronado High School campus\, 650 D Avenue. \nYou won’t want to miss the fashion show which hits the runway at 6 pm. \nAspiring fashion designer and visual art student\, Wendy Alcaraz collaborated with her fellow artists to design a clothing line based on artworks produced in the studio. The artworks will be projected as the artists themselves model the clothing inspired by their artworks. This year there will be digital illustrations on display. Junior Isabella Vilcans will display some prized hand-blown glass. Some of the most stunning figure drawings we have had in years will be featured in the show. DESCRIPTION:Photo courtesy CUSD\nThe Coronado School of the Arts (CoSA) Conservatory of Classical and Contemporary Dance invites audiences to Threads of Resilience\, a powerful showcase of original dance works that explore personal transformation and strength. The concert takes the stage Dec. 12 and 13 at 7pm at the Coronado Performing Arts Center at 650 D Avenue. Tickets are available at www.cosafoundation.org/events. \n“Adversity and resilience are innate to the human experience\,” said Caryn Ipapo-Glass\, COSA Dance Director. “In times of divisiveness and polarity it can be difficult to hold on to empathy\, or to remember that we collectively have lived experiences that unify us. Our journeys may be vastly different\, but joy\, fear\, love\, and loss are universal; and the opportunity for personal growth is always present. Cathartic connection is one of the most powerful aspects of dance\, and one of the things I love most about it. When artists are brave enough to share\, and audiences are brave enough to be present and to feel\, that is when powerful human connections are made.” \nThis remarkable concert features 10 original dance works\, choreographed by both faculty and student artists\, and will also include six innovative short dance films that push the boundaries of artistic expression; featuring “Resilience Poems” written by several of the COSA Dance students. \nEach dance piece represents a deeply personal narrative\, capturing moments of profound life experiences where individuals have confronted adversity and emerged transformed. The choreographers explore themes of resilience\, personal growth\, and the human spirit’s remarkable capacity to overcome challenges. \n \n“This concert marks my first artistic endeavor with my COSA Dance students and colleagues. Transition in and of itself can be adverse. With it comes a great deal of uncertainty\, vulnerability\, and required trust.
